    Hi guys
Could use some help. Took the 91 Testarossa out last night and it would idle fine but when accelerating from 1-2 gear it would be doggie then all of a sudden the power would kick in all of a sudden like a turbo charger! I believe one bank was cutting out then kicking in all of a sudden. Intermittantly it would do that. Stopped for dinner then on the way home it felt like 6 cylinders with no power all the way home.
I noticed oil pooling up (about a quarters worth) just ahead of the right (1-6) Distributer cap, on top. Pulled the rubber cover off and had quite a lot of oil on the bottom of the cap.
I'm thinking the seal behind the distributer cap is leaking and shorting out the right bank.
    My question is.....
    1) How do I get the cap off
    2) Can I replace the seal pretty easily? And how?
    Thanks guys!!

I replaced my seals and gaskets on my distributors last year, really easy, no timing to mess with like on a conventional engine. Remove, replace parts and re-install.

    See the attached diagram:
you should remove the distributor (#1), distributor rotor (#9), unscrew the distrtibutor cap support (part #3) and remove it together with the seal (#5) and gasket (#6).
You can get the seal and gasket from RicambiAmerica:
    http://www.ricambiamerica.com/product_info.php?products_id=196865
    http://www.ricambiamerica.com/product_info.php?products_id=193802

More detailed procedure for reassembly of these parts and fitting the seal (part #5) inside the distributor cap support (part #3) is described in this dpcument (a similar procedure for Ferrari 328):

    http://ferrari.cdyn.com/carl_rose_docs/Ferrari%20328%20Distributor%20Shaft%20Seal%20Replacement.pdf

It is a good idea to replace all other gaskets as well (parts #6 and 8 on this drawing).
If you have any questions, let me know.
    Cheers.

The PPT file with stencils for a new distributor cap gasket is attached.

    Okay-an update.
Opened up the distributer cap and was surprised not to see much oil "inside the cap". It is leaking a bit though cuz some oil was collecting on the bottom of the flange. There seems to be more oil on top, just in front of the distributor cap. So the #6 gasket is leaking or the valve cover near there is leaking.
Any ways I cleaned the cap and rotor off with electronics cleaner and slapped it back together until my parts arrive to change the new oil seal and gaskets.
Started it up and pulled the LH Fuel pump fuse out of the board and it ran rough. Put it back in and it ran smooth again. Next I took out the RH Fuel pump fuse and the engine died immediately!
I did the #87 to #30 relay jumper test and I could hear both running when jumped.
I also removed and replaced/wiggled the "Y" connector just incase. (Note I replaced the burnt plastic "Y" connector and soldered on a new clip for the fuel pump (1-6 bank that was burnt bad last month) Ran good after that.
took the car out for a spin and ran good for 3 blocks then started to run on 6 cylinders again......Then ran good for a few blocks..then bad again. So it's intermittant.
What can I check next?? Thanks!

I would suggest two things to do next:

    1) is to test the fuel pump protection relay located in the compartment above the right rear wheel (accessible from the engine bay). A procedure for testing the protection relay has been described by Steven Magnusson several times before, i.e:
    http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=279948&highlight=protection+relay

    2) your ignition coil or ignition module may be giving it up... I had the same intermittent problem before untill one bank gave up completely and I had to replace one ignition module and later the corresponding coil as well.
    Check this out:
    http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/vbclassified.php?do=ad&id=4132
    or
    http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/vbclassified.php?do=ad&id=4134
    or my other similar posts.

    3) check the wire going from the coil to distributor. The connection of this wire and spark plug wires inside the destributor are really capricious; I had to use an Ohm-meter to monitor the wire resistance while tightening those contact screws inside the distributor cap, which penetrate the wires and keep them in place.

    Cheers,
    Juri

    Thanks Juri
I'll check theses things next. I Appreciate your time and input!
Isn't one of my fuel pumps bad if I pull one fuel pump fuse and it dies?? The weird part is that when jumped..both pumps hum..
