I was at the counter at the local post office today. Next to me was a man of Middle Eastern descent (in his forties) buying a roll of stamps. When he was handed the roll, he handed it back to the clerk and stated "I do not want American Flag stamps, give me flowers or something".

I looked at him and said "Do you have a problem with the American Flag"? He stated "My choice of stamps is my own damn business" and walked out (With different stamps in booklet that the clerk handed him). When I left the window I was at and passe the window the guy was at, that clerk wispered to me "Good for you"!

I know there are people out there that hate America and prefer not to have stamps with an American Flag. I guess if I were in Texas, a few guys would have followed him outside and pounded him! I live in a small town and got kinda shook up about this experience, as I have never met a person from the Middle East that has anything against the US!

Would you have had my reaction to this guy?

Brush it off. There are all kinda of people in this world, some of then cool, some not. It all depends on what your definition of cool is.

Now personally, I wouldn't have approached the guy, who would've known what kinda person he was. What if he had a bomb or something?
Stay away from brownies. That's my warning to ya! :D

I would've found it curious, but I don't think I would've called him on it.

I can think of at least a couple benign reasons:
    1. He's sending something to family back home in the middle east and is afraid the US flag stamps might draw negative attention to them.
    2. He's had some bad run-ins with some cops or DHS folks and wasn't feeling particularly patriotic that day.

It seems to me that a person's choice of stamps is indeed

    a) his own business, and
    b) a freedom which he is entitled to.

I don't know how I would have reacted if I had been standing there, honestly.

I often mail Cards to associates and friends in Europe, Asia and the Middle East. I prefer not to use postage stamps with American flags, Statue of liberty etc. to stay PC with my interntional friends. I am not trying to defend the guy but maybe it was the same with him.

There would have been a nicer way to ask the postal clerk to exchange the stamps for something more seasonal or festive. I hope the Middles Eastern guy was not against the American flag, because if he was... you should have given him a piece of your mind!

I agree with the free speech and the choice thing, however, please don't be so public and obvious. Personally, I would've never let him get away with this, but that's the New York in me talking.

We all have our own opinions that may or may not be politicaly correct. When I comes to something of this magnitude I understand that people may be a little upset. I personaly love this country after being to some third world contires and looking at how people live. This guy may not like it here but who cares...why stress yourself and raise your blood pressure for someone like that? Maybe he is upset after what has happened in the middle east....he'll get over it. (hopefully)

Tom how was Cancun? When you coming to LA? Next Saturday is a big party here at Spyder club for my 24th....I got some people being shipped in from NYC, DC, and Miami....Good times!!!

yeah...mine is more like that metalic yellow on the new 05 murci spider.

however, it changes shades and color depending on the angles of lights/sun...(but yes, that is the common reference. you are correct).

VRAA real name is Ricky Agrawal (from his profile).

I think Agrawal is an Indian last name... I could be wrong. But I think VRAA was making a joke about his own color.

None the less, it was not funny.

Maybe he just didn't want that kinda stamp. It doesn't matter that he is of middle eastern decent. It could have been that he wanted a different kind of stamp. Just because he is middle eastern and decided that he didn't want stamps with an american flag on it, is not a reason to get worked up. I doubt the same reaction and jumping to conclusions would have happened if it were a white guy.
