I see lots of threads about gas prices, and one took a left turn (get it?) questioning the evils of non-necessary energy expenditures, such as NASCAR races, in light of Katrina, gas prices, war, etc.

But my question to all of you is this: Are there some activities that do as much or more for the common good than they consume?

Tulane University Football They are practicing at Jesuit Catholic High School here in Dallas, as I type this. The NCAA has waived the rule that requires them to attend 12 hours of classes this semester to be eligible to play football. Is the greater good served by these guys playing football, by giving them something to concentrate on, and giving their fans something to cheer about? Or should they be attending to more pressing issues?

NO Saints Football I heard the PR officer of the Saints say on the radio yesterday that they are recieving a military escort into New Orleans today so that they may retrieve their computers and move their offices temporarily to San Antonio. Military escort? Obviously, some decision maker must think that fielding a pro football team bearing the name New Orleans is critical to the rebuilding efforts. The city just lost their homes, business, loved ones, neighbors... should their football team be taken away (shut down) as well?

NASCAR Huge industry. Tens, if not hundreds of millions of dollars worth of economic activity surround every race. Thousands of people would be affected financially if the government stepped in and said "Sorry, all you guys do is waste gas driving around the country in your 150 big-rigs. You must cease operations." Would it be worth it?

I haven't made up my mind. What do you think?

Take a bus to the game/race. Make those arriving by car park a light-year away from stadium. Still on the lot, but... fat reduction will be a bonus.

As to fat reduction (for kids, too) and getting there using as little petrol as possible, there are ways and other ways - here is a pic I did a few years ago

I'm sailing away. Set an open course for the virgin sea.
For I've got to be free, free to face the life that's ahead of me
On board I'm the captain, so climb aboard
We'll search for tomorrow on every shore
And I'll try, oh lord, I'll try to carry on

    Maymaynemay Maymaynemay Maymaynemay Maymaynemay

A gathering of angels appeared above our heads
They sang to us this song of hope
And this is what they said

Come sail away, come sail away, come sail away with me… lads
Come sail away, come sail away, come sail away with me
I thought that they were angels, but to my surprise
We climbed about their starship and headed for the skies

Come sail away, come sail away, come sail away with me… lads
Come sail away, come sail away, come sail away with me… lads

Actually Benson's private plane is landing in Baton Rouge and they're taking a couple of trucks to get comps and office supplies and then putting them back on the jet and back to San Antonio.

I know that San Antonio is really trying to get the Saints home games there this season. It's probably a way of getting them to show Benson that they can do well in supporting a franchise there in hopes of having the team move.

With Nascar, it's not only the trucks that are needed to move the teams around but the 150,000 + fans who drive to see the races from who knows how far away.

But overall the best thing to do is find a way to continue on with life and adapt to changes, be it for good or bad.

I would assume the Nascar guys use Deisel trucks. Something regular commuters around the world have been doing with cars for years now.

Yes the rigs use Diesel--the cars use Sunoco fuel only.about 110 octane. Nothing regular cars can use anyway.
