The struts that support the engine decklid on my '85 Mondial QV have become totally useless. Is it OK to physically lie on top of the engine to replace these 'lil gems? Are there things that we are supposed to do (besides offering gifts to the gods of the prancing horse) to avoid damage? I have considered rigging a hammock from my overhead trolley, but even then it is tough to get under the raised deck and back to the firewall. At this point in my life it is nearly impossible to grow longer arms, so I am asking for suggestions, directions, ridicule, or alcohol in order to accomplish the oncoming replacement.

Thank all of you for your continued support.

Are you saying you aren't able to lean into either side to change them out? Can you phone in a friend, not worth putting that much weight lying on things to change these, yes it sucks, but the pains temporary, new strut supports last (for a relatively short time too...) :(

They are attached very low on the firewall. Although I love the design it does not provide easy access. thanks for the reminder of their short lifespan.......Grrrr You are right: It Sucks

I'm not sure about an '85, but my '87 cabriolet doesn't have hydraulic lifts, you just lift it up and it locks into place. The item that looks like a strut is just the lock, it has a tab you press in to unlock it to close the engine cover and it doesn't help lift at all. Are you sure your lock just isn't broken? Or do you have a coupe and it is totally different?

I have a Coupe, and it IS totally different. Thanks for reminding me that there are different body models. I am new to the club, and have a lot to learn.

    Regards

I did my struts a few months back, used an old duvet on top of the engine for a bit of padding. No problems lying half on the engine, half on the rear wing.
I didn't fancy paying the Ferrari tax, so used Stabilus gas struts - They look and work the same.

Strut wise in Canada will re-gas them for you for about $40 each if you want to keep the OEM appearance and Ferrari logo, that's what I did with my frunk struts.
