Well, I am finally starting the major service on my car. After years of reading the success many of my fellow brothers have had, I am diving head first. Here we go..

We had to move the lift as far forward as the forward arm would allow to clear the forward cradle. The car is stable, but I am not opposed to some jack stands. I would not have attempted this without all the great support and info that ferrarichat has to provide. I am using my348.com as a bible. Tonight the engine should be out. More pics to follow.

That is freakin' awesome... not only did you not remove the bonnet or the bumper (the way I do it now), you also left the entire exhaust system there too. I shall try that approach for my next major.

When I had the rear end of the car hanging off the back of my 4 post lift far enough so the sub frame bolt plates would clear, I found it disconcerting enough to be working under there that I put a couple of buckets in the front trunk, then used a hose to fill them with water. I also used the tow ring at the front of the car to tie it to the lift, then ran a line to an eye bolt in the wall. Probably not needed, but when it's hanging that far out it just looks like if a fly lands on the transmission, the whole thing will tip back.

The balance of the car feels fairly stable, but we felt the same way. We tried blocking the rear lift points 1.5 inches higher to shift the weight to the front, but it made the subframe bind slightly. Once we correctly located the lift it seemed ok

good job! its funny I have the same lift and had the exact same issues when lifting my 355 body off of the motor cradle. had to set the car on blocks and move the lift forward a few inches more so she would clear... I wouldn't say its the best lift for the job, but it does get her done!

I was getting ready to post all my pic and tell everyone what a great experience this has been, then I dropped a washer into the head on the left side. My week has been ruined, I read a few post were they managed to "fish" it out, but I am not so lucky. One more attempt tonight with a different flexy magnet, then its off with the oil pan. I am really not looking forward to this.....

It just seems to be that kind of week. The delivery company just dropped my lift off, literally. They are shipping a new one via a different carrier.

Sorry to hear this. On the sunny side, you are going to get to know engine much better and this has value.

    Do you have a borescope?

To everyone who does a DIY major: make sure when you pull your spark plugs out, stuff all holes with rags. Then when the cam covers comes off, block of all those nooks and crannies too. All those little nuts and washers are easy to drop.
I'm not clear why you're talking about pulling off the oil pan to find the washer, did it fall down an oil passage that is large enough for it to fall all the way down to the oil pan? Most of those big openings in the head when you pull off the cam covers are just closed off chambers supporting the valves and springs and cam shafts. If you don't have a scope, a small dental type mirror and a bright light will hopefully do the trick to look in those chambers and you will find it lying back in a corner. That's where I found mine.....

+1 on plugging things, I have a selection of these Caplugs - Home - Caplugs that I keep around for when I am servicing engines, you can leave them in for long term storage as well.

All good advice. Given how cheaply one can buy a scope for this would be a no-brainer for me however. Less than 200 bucks...

If you watch the video "ferrari 348 engine cam belt change part IV". About 5 minutes in this potential problem is addressed....trying to help others avoid these pitfalls (no pun intended).

We tried the scope, didn't see anything. The oil passages are large enough to swallow those little washers. On the bright side, I'll save alot of money on my car insurance

Did you see where it fell? When I dropped mine I thought I was a gonner too, but then I finally saw it with a mirror and light tucked back in a little pocket in the casting, so double and tripple check before doing anything drastic
