Anyone ever built their own? I don't like most of the designs, and am good with wood (no sic comments you maggots). How hard would it be to build your own?

It's about the greater sense of appreciation involved with the creation of something. A humidor is more than just a box. The humidor I use, heck my Father's Zippo, are both older than I am and I'm 30.

I don't think it would be hard to make a wooden one. I think the hardest point would be lining it, attaching the Spanish cedar to the wood that it is made from. This would be done before assembly I would think. Using thicker cedar and letting it stick up to make the seal may be easier than making that separately

There are tons of people that use ice chests/coolers. Called Coolerdors. They seal great, just add some heartfelt beads and a digi hygro and your basically done. Add Spanish cedar sheets b/c they help keep things regulated a bit.

If you want to store a lot of boxes this is a great way to do it.

Yeah, that Ferrari humidor, but I don't have $5,000 or however much that damn thing is.

Honestly what I hate most about humidor designs is that shine they put on the wood. It looks stupid IMO. I've always hated wood that's all polished up and shiny like that, it looks fake. I guess it's some kinda "high class" thing, but I don't like it. Also, I don't smoke a lot of cigars, so I'm looking to do a box that holds a box or 2 max, and I don't wanna pay $500 for a box to hold a few cigars when I can probably build one for $100. See, this is the joy of being able to build your own stuff, you save a $hitload of money! I'll be posting my entertainment center when it's done :D

Good, there's a precedent at least.

Yeah, I'd love to see it!

Did he use that line to pick up chicks? :D

Seriously, I'm not crazy with all the tools and stuff, but am good at building things. I love it personally, it's a lot of fun and the smell is great. I think I get it from my father, he used to have a lathe in the house and did a lot of building when we lived in Durango. I believe a lot of the signs he made are still up.

I was thinking of making the box from Cedar itself, and if I wanted a different outside (Maple or something), then I could get 1/4 or 1/8" sheets and attach them to the outside. Would that work? I might just leave it Cedar though, Cedar looks and smells great.

Does anyone know anything about the humidification part? I haven't reverse engineered a cigar box yet. What do they put in them to keep them humid?

I guess you could make it all cedar, I don't really know. I know that spanish cedar is important because it doesn't give off a smell/taste like other cedar and it helps regulate the humidity.

The humidification device is either one that has a foam like material that you wet with a propylene glycol/distilled water solution. It comes pre-mixed in a bottle. Or Humidification Beads. It is the new thing. They not only release moisture buy absorb it if humidity gets too high. I bought my beads from www.cigarmony.com Heartfelt industries has them too. Get a digital hygrometer so you can monitor your humidity. The analog versions don't work very well.

I would go to www.cigarweekly.com and go to the forums, in the "cedar room" section there is a lot of info on humidors. People on there have built their own. There is a members gallery where you can see some of them IIRC.

Thanks guys! I found some Spanish Cedar that's not too expensive really.

Also, they have one of those WoodCraft stores here in the valley, so I'm gonna check it out. Should be like a toy store! ha!

    Thanks again for your help.
