I am in the process of degreeing the cam shafts. Is there a trick to getting the cams aligned to the marks on the caps. When the cams are placed on the supports they will be off from the marks. The cams then needs to be rotated to match the marks but one set of lobes has to depress the valves for one cylinder. I have not figured out the best way to do this. Any expert help will be most appreciated.

Not an expert but this is how I did it a number of times:
Bend up a couple of U shapes out of pieces of 1/16" thick aluminum so they fit around unground part of the camshafts. Grab cam, through aluminum, with vise grips. Work the cams into position so a vise grip is supporting the cam in the proper angular position and go ahead and set the timing pins. This can take a few tries but you leave no marks on the cam and yet the unground surface and the teeth on the vise grips give a really hard stop to work against. Lock down both cams before setting pins. Another U chanel and a pair of channel locks fine tunes the settings. Check again after setting chain tension. Good luck.

Years ago I was told at FAF in Atlanta to align the marks on the cams slightly to the inside of the marks on the caps so when the new chain beds the marks will will be correctly lined up. Made sense to me.
