I don't know if any of you have this problem but from day one, I've been bothered by a sticky cover beyond my steering wheel. So bad that if I touch it, I get black on my fingers.

Recently I stumbled across a thread in the 348/355 section on how to take care of it, yourself.

    Well here I go..

I put the screws back in the column and the others in a baggy and brought them home. Since my wife isn't home, I had full reign of sinks, counter tops and hand towels :)

In a bucket I doused the lower panel with oven cleaner and scrubbed away with a Brillo pad. I stayed will one direction scrubbing.

After rinsing really well, and catching spots here and there I missed, I gave it a thorough drying and went on to the top piece.

My dilemma. They came out so smooth, so clean, with no stick, I'm not sure if I should paint them as suggested in the other write up. They are really nice just the way they are but I think I should cote them.

So I took a Tupperware container (again wife not around) and spray painted it with Satin as suggested and then the other side with flat. I'm just not sure which to go with.

If I go by my ashtray and console plastic, they're more flat than satin, but satin makes it look newer.

I'm still not sure so I'm stopping for now, to sleep on it.

    What do you guys think?

In my experience... The 3M scotch pads are not necessary nor is it necessary to use the 400 grit sand paper suggested in the 348/355 write up. You're just taking the sticky off, not the color. Maybe it would come out even better but I can't imagine it being any better than what I have done.

I paint tomorrow. I'll do the lower panel with flat since I can always go satin over it if I don't like it.

Forgot my input, yes stick with F L A T.
btw, after taking off the steering column cover, anything you found that may explain your dash light issues?

Thats why i started this project in the first place. I went in looking for something obvious on the light stalk. nothing :( but, decided to beautify the cover while i was in that deep.

I sprayed the lower cover with FLAT this morning. I'll post the outcome tonight..

what do I think? You are going to get spanked by the wife when she found out that you painted her Tupperware tops. You might like it.

Lovely job, matt finish is the way to go. It's odd how the plastic has decayed.
