Static timing set up : No 3 at TDC with a dial gauge . At this point the little vernier pointer and the crankshaft pulley are right on the 3 mark ?? As static timing should be 6 deg BTDC on number 3 I should now turn back the Pulley by 6 deg to the 9-10 mark ?? At that point the ign points should be just opening and obviously at the number three cylinder connection. I do this but find that at that point the triangular distributer housing is not flush but rather a lot off set...ie right on the adjustment limits....and against the bolt stops as I turn Appreciate any comments thanks
Set all the cam marks and check they aligh with the marks on the caps. The timing pointer should be on the PMS 3-4 mark. Punto Morto Superior Italian for top dead centre and denoting for no 3 & 4 Cylinders. Compression stroke it can be 180 deg out and on its induction stroke. Now rotate the engine to 6 degrees of static ignition advance, the rotor should be 240 degrees past the vertical mark and line up with a (240) mark on the dizzy base, ie approx. 4 o clock the points should be just about to open. Check with a test lamp to make sure. If not rotate dizzy to suit, if you have no adjustment on the dizzy ie its hard up against the stops then you need to adjust the rear dog drive. The dizzy should be roughly central of the adjustment slot.
Thanks.... Just a point is the rear dog drive the FOUR position drive that slots into the Cam end ( so i must move it 90 degrees ) OR is it something inside the Dizzy with smaller adjustments Cheers
To adjust you have to remove the dizzy, its what engages into the camshaft. Move it to suit the ignition marks as described above. Its a bit fiddly but simple once you understand the basic operation. So long as you get the rotor arm pointing in the 4 o clock position you are in the right ballpark.
