Don't laugh at me for asking - I have never been there before. I have a wedding to attend next month in Acapulco. I just want to make sure that I don't need anything more than a Driver's License before it's too late. A Friday thru Sunday only.

I live in Newport Beach which is around 2 hours to the mexican border, and anyone could drive over the border. Getting back in they ask for driver's license, and ask what your citizenship is..

You need a passport or ORIGINAL birth certificate or a notarized photocopy/fax copy to get onto the airplane going to Mexico, along with a driver's license or other government-issued ID. The birth certificate must be government-issued, not the one that the hospital gives you. They won't let you into Mexico if you run the risk of not being let back into the U.S.

Bring your passport and other o.d. just in case!

A year ago I went to TJ with a few of my friends. When we crossed the border to go back home they asked for I.D. and for you to state your citizenship. Well one of my friends told them she was a citizen of South Korea! They took her to some room and held her for about an hour questioning her about I dont know what. They eventually let her back to California though.

Something similar happened to another friend of mine. The people with him had to drive 3-4 hours home to get his passport and birth certificate, and then drive another 3-4 hours back to the border to get him.

    Bring your documents!

I've been an international and domestic traveler for quite some time and I would recommend that you travel with your VALID passport and your VALID State I.D. (drivers license).

I have been working in Merida, Yucatan, Mexico (west of Cancun) - yes, a passport is needed to get back to the U.S.A. Don't mess around - you are traveling to a foreign country.

In the event your I.D. gets lost or stolen, may I suggest that you scan your passport/I.D. and have it accessable from the internet. I also do this with credit cards that have fraud protection as well.

    Passport? Driving license? Naw....

I know this place where the fence is bent and the water’s shallow. It’s a yellow brick road man, I can get you through, no problem, the price is reasonable and the truck will meet you. All you have to do is guarantee a certain amount of work in a garment factory I own once you get to Mexico - you’ll pay price of a ticket off in no time, you’ll even live on site. We'll be budies!

It’s a done deal! See you by the third cactus on the left. Just warble like a yellow billed sap sucker three times and my boys will be there....

I don't mind getting a passport, but the wedding is the 18th (Enzo's B'day too). Do I still have enough time or can I speed up the process?

    Pretty much everything's covered here,
    http://travel.state.gov/travel/tips/regional/regional_1174.html
    but this is very important:

    Health

Health problems sometimes affect visitors to Mexico.

For the most current information on immunizations and heath risks, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) maintains an international travelers hotline at 1-888-232-3228 and a travel health home page at http://www.cdc.gov/travel.

For information about outbreaks of infectious diseases abroad, consult the World Health Organization's web site at http://www.who.int/en. Further health information for travelers is available on the World Health Organization's International Travel and Health page at http://www.who.int/ith.

Immunizations are recommended against typhoid, hepatitis A and hepatitis B. Booster shots for tetanus-diphtheria and measles are also recommended. For visitors coming directly from the United States, no immunization certification is required to enter Mexico. If you are traveling from a part of the world infected with yellow fever, a vaccination certificate is required.

Malaria is found in some rural areas of Mexico, particularly those near the southwest coast. Travelers to malarial areas should consult their physician and take the recommended dosage of chloroquine, mefloquine (Lariam™), doxycycline, or atovaquone/proguanil (Malarone™) or other anti-malarial medication. Although these preventative drugs are not considered necessary for travelers to the major resort areas on the Pacific and Gulf coasts, travelers to those areas should use insect repellent and take other personal protection measures to reduce contact with mosquitoes, particularly from dusk to dawn when malaria transmission is most likely. Wear long-sleeved shirts, long pants, and hats, and, use insect repellents that contain DEET.

Air pollution in Mexico City is severe. It is most dangerous during thermal inversions that occur most often from December to May. Air pollution plus Mexico City's high altitude are a particular health risk for the elderly and persons with high blood pressure, anemia, or respiratory or cardiac problems. If this applies to you, consult your doctor before traveling to Mexico City.

In high altitude areas, such as Mexico City, most people need a short adjustment period. Spend the first few days in a leisurely manner, with a light diet and reduced intake of alcohol. Avoid strenuous activity, including everything from sports to rushing up the stairs. Reaction signs to high altitude are lack of energy, a tendency to tire easily, shortness of breath, occasional dizziness, and insomnia.

Drink only bottled water or water that has been boiled for 20 minutes. Beware of ice cubes that may not have been made with purified water. Vegetables and fruits should be peeled or washed in a purifying solution. If you can't peel it or cook it, do NOT eat it. Don't eat food purchased from street vendors. Don't eat dairy products unless you know for a fact that they have been pasteurized. Diarrhea sufferers may benefit from anti-microbial treatment that may be prescribed or purchased over the counter. Travelers should consult a physician, rather than attempt self-medication, if the diarrhea is severe or persists several days.

A drivers lisense will get you into Mex accross the border into the country about 20 miles when another set of rules apply : passport needed. Find out where passports are prossed in your region, at this point you will have to go in person to expidite/ensure it. If you mail it even with express service you may not have time. A call to your state senator or rep may help smooth things along if you mail it.
My brother get one in one day in person.
My Dad took 2 Months and only the state senator trick ensured he had it the day before our trip. DONT SEND IT TO PHILLY.

I live in San Diego and a few buddies of mine walk over 4 or 5 times a month and they say since the 1st the line to get back have tripled. You can still get back with you drivers license but they making it easer for people with passports. Apparently sometime this year it will become mandatory to have one. I don’t know when the law will pass. Also the price for passports has just gone up and it takes almost two months to receive it.
