Okay, we've recently had a thread wondering if people ask what you do for a living (that was mine) and another concerning if people ask how much your Ferrari cost (that's on the 360/430 forum).

In a similar vein, do people ever feel compelled to tell you what car they'd rather have than your Ferrari? First, though, let me stress that I'm not offended by such a comment. I don't care if I'm the only person in the world who wants a Ferrari (other than if that were the case, experienced mechanics would eventually be hard to find). One of the many benefits of being an atheist is that I don't feel the need to have everyone on the planet believing in the exact same things that I do.

Anyway, I've heard, among others, these comments:

"I like your car, but I'd rather have a GT-R." To which I replied "Good. You're lucky. Don't ever change." When he asked what I meant I said "It's much better to want a cheaper car than a Ferrari and you'll save a lot of money and time. Save yourself, but as for me, it's too late." It's true, too.

Then there was "A 'Vette is faster. Why would you spend so much on a slower car?" My reply, "Because I guess I just didn't approach it in a logical way like you are." To another guy with a similar comment but a nicer attitude I said, "I like Corvettes just fine and they're a bargain and I hope to have one some day."

An apparent Lambo fan, "Dude, why didn't you get a Lamborghini? Everybody loves those. You'd be driving down the street and everybody would stare at you" I said "Call me crazy, but I don't like people staring at me. So I got a Ferrari so no one would notice."

I felt sorry for the guy that said "I like your car but I wouldn't know what to do with it. I'll just stick to my truck." I couldn't think of anything but "Okay."

The comments aren't always from non-owners. I ran into a guy who wanted to let me know he had lots more cars and class than I did. I was driving my 993 Turbo. He asked "Is that a Turbo S? Or just a plain one?" I just laughed and said "It's just a plain one, like you see crowding the streets day in and day out."

Then there was the biker who approached at a gas stop, along with the fairly hot thing holding down his pillion. "Man, why not ride a bike. They're more fun and lots cheaper." Judging his attitude he seemed kind of neutral, so I just said "I have a bike. And you're right, on a nice road the lowliest motorcycle can be better than the loftiest car." Then his attitude took a turn for the worse. He gave a smirking glance to his girlfriend and said "So why'd you spend so much on a crappy car?"

Well, I hadn't really heard any nasty comments before. There were people around, it was daylight, I judged he wouldn't shoot me. So I, looking at his girlfriend, said "Well, it's all relative, isn't it?" He tried to work that out and finally asked what I meant. I said "Did you ever consider that buying this car could have been, to me, much less of an expense than buying your bike was to you? In that sense, I didn't spend much at all on this crappy car." He was trying to think of a snappy retort, but that's difficult to do when one doesn't even know the meaning of the word "retort". I drove off feeling slightly evil. It felt good.

Have you looked at the prices on GT-Rs lately? ;)

People don't really inflict their "better car" notions on me, here, in PC-land.
Instead, I get more "cars are bad" attitudes --- from people in big honkin' SUVs.

Mostly, people here are freaked that I have more than one car.

Never got that. Mostly people just wanted to ride in my 328 when I had it.

As long as someone mans up and buys whatever it is that he likes, it's fine by me.

If it's just rationalizing why he never wrote the check for the car he really wanted, then IMHO he's another car magazine browser who hasn't experienced anything automotively.

No one has come up w/ a car they would rather have other than maybe a different model Ferrari. The car's presence pretty much shuts everyone down.

IIRC, I only had two people react this way. One of which was driving a "camero" and had to say something negative just as the light turned green because he wasn't man enough to stick around afterwards. It was obvious in both situations the people were extremely jealous, which is sad because my F car cost less than a new BMW at the time.

I got this type of **** from my sales engineer before he realized we had a ferrari (2). On a yacht, company paid, doing a drink cruise around new port harbour non the less.. He shut up eventually. but had no idea in regards as to the quality versus other cars and the depreciation other cars have. I respect folks who grew up liking another car, but to pull the "id rather have something else besides a ferrari" earns you a seat at the "im not quite out of the closest" table (no offense meant)

He drives a honda hatch back..

Nice kid, but way to emotional and left leaning. Fortunate for him, I keep politics separate from the work place and pay him his 100K a year salary based on his merits.

    He is obnoxious.

    To each their own.

Don't get many negative comments on my Mondial but my comment to people who don't understand cars at all is that I'm a car guy, I've had a lot of cars and I've never had a car that drives or feels like this one does. There are a lot of very nice cars but the whole experience of driving one is not comparable to any other vehicle I've ever driven.

I've run into this and I always compliment their choice. Usually, it's with people pretty young.

Some people are looking for a fight and that just defuses the situation.

But, if someone loves Corvettes or Porsche or Lamborghini or whatever over Ferrari, that's fine with me. More power to them.

    They're just wrong. :)

I think people are generally more offended the more radical your car looks. By the same token, true car enthusiasts seem to be more appreciative the more radiucal your car looks. When I had my 348 I rarely got any nasty comments, and got a handful of compliments most times I drove it.

If someone told me I should have bought something else, I would probably just shrug it off.

As the Florida Fchat group will attest, I drive to the beat of a different drummer, so to speak.

The hardest thing to impart to most people who bring this subject up is that it's never about one particular attribute, most expensive, most beautiful, fastest 0-60, most titles per marque. Each marque has it's own claims to fame, reason for being best at something. Ferrari manages to take top marks in pretty much every category, but I can't deny when someone says they think the Aventador is better, or that the GT-R is the smart buy, based on THEIR criteria. If you're picking a winner, you just don't get what it's about. I've had a very few people say things like this to me. It's usually Lambo lovers. For what they want, they're right, and they're welcome to their opinion. I've had a vette guy or two comment that they could toast my F430 with their ZR's. They're right. But they wouldn't have needed to say it if they weren't a least a little jealous. I do get tired of the jealousy. These people REALLY don't get it.

I tell people like that that I've been in love with the shape and sounds of Ferraris since I first saw one as a teenager.
I always wanted to own one and I'm able to do that now in my current life situation.

I thought I would tire of it after several years, but so far, I am still in love with the cars.

Buy what makes you happy. Nothing else matters.

    Well...

Ferrari used to own the performance, exotic and beauty categories back in the '60s. I think that's less true today. Aston Martins are arguably the handsomest (especially the DBS), and Porsche's 997-based GT2 RS would be my choice for serious track events. And I'd say Bugatti is higher up the food chain in terms of rarity.

    But...

That said, when I had my 328 I thought it was the best balance of looks, driving involvement, value (yes, really) and exclusivity. There are a lot of nice cars around San Diego, and there was never a time when I was out driving the 328 that I would have wanted to swap rides with anything.

That's another good point. When people tell me that Car "X" is faster, I just say "you're probably right". It's pointless to argue numbers while standing next to something so beautiful.

The point I was trying to impart is that the debate itself is pointless. You can make an argument for any extreme machine.

Why not just smile and respond, "Yah, I've got one of those, too.". (Porsche, Vette, bike, etc)?

If you want to further "kill them with kindness", then compliment their ride as you drive off. Most of these folks are simply trying to bait and rattle you. Why give them the satisfaction?

I live on a small island in the NW, with a populace so left-leaning that we're about to capsize, if they catch me in the 550, the discussion usually centers around how much better a choice a Prius or a Volt would be.... Given that my 'greenest' of 6 cars struggles to achieve 20mpg, and we all know that 'speed kills', it's hard for me to keep up my end of the discussion....
I do manage to thank them for driving Priii, so there's enough petrol remaining for my ravenous beasts....

I agree. Take a TR to a "vette" show and see who the show stopper is!!! Wherever a Ferrari is....a crowd soon develops!!!

I haven't had that remark yet.. but I'm thinking the compliment route is the best "that's a good choice.. a very nice car".

I remember when I was in school, I went to the Porsche dealership and noticed that they had a Carrera GT. I was checking it out and this other young guy comes over and is checking it out as well. I comment that it's a $200,000 car. He then utters "geez you could buy a house for that".

When people think like that.. they automatically assign themselves into a category of non-buyer for that exotic. They aren't in the mindset to allow themselves to buy a car that is that high priced. In my mind, it's not a matter of if, but when I'd buy it. There was always that abundance in life to provide for both a house and exotic. It's a given. It makes me wonder how often this mental limitation on what's possible causes a comparison.

True story; I can't make this up. I drove my 83 Mondial cab into work one day, and parked out away from the rest of the crowd. I parked near, but not next to a bright blue Mazda RX7 convertible.

I went upstairs to the conference room that overlooked the parking lot. My boss, and some peers were just starting the meeting. So, the boss walks over to the window, and looks down and starts ranting about how crappy that red Ferrari is compared to his Mazda. How the Wankel engine is so much better, and the comfort, suspension, etc. Then he started to run down the cabrio top which was down but not covered. He kept comparing them, and finding fault with the Mondial. He said he was glad he didn't own one of them. Finally, he turned away, and kind of asked 'I wonder who's it is?'

There was a few minutes of silence, then one of my buddies spoke up: "Uh - that's Doc's car." Everyone turned to glare at me, and I just sat there, with a smug look on my face. I left the dept a few months later.
