I was just thinking about BMW's and their red-lit gauges - other companies are using them now too. Anyway, I always found that red lights in my face triggers my "stop" or caution responses, and that I found myself with this mild stress or tension driving my old BMW at night. I was always checking down to see if the red was a warning light or something.

On the other hand, greens and blues are "reassuring" colors when I drive.

Did anyone else have the same reaction? Does it go away over time?

I've seen these "stress relievers" on TV that are headsets with blinking red LED's in your eyes - but I never understood how that could relax you.

My understanding is that red/amber/orange color lights are easiest on the eyes and are also not overwhelmingly bright as other colors can become. Hence they were first used in airplanes instrumentations. Personally, I like those white face dials that reverses color at night (I think Porsche was the first ones to use them).

All BMWs I have owned, my fcar, my NSX, and even my old Prelude had red/orange lights. I just feel its "normal," so it doesn't bother me.

I really like the blue in some cars.

I hate the "lexus" white, that gets to me after awhile.

All rovers I have had green lights, and I never really thought much about it so I do not dislike or like them.

Modern Fcars with Green I do not mind, but do not have enough long term seat time to really comment.

It is scientific fact that red is the best. This is because it is the lowest energy wavelength on the spectrum of visable light, therefore causing your pupil to dialate the least, which make it best for night driving as you look back and forth between a dark road and a lighted dashboard.

I saw that the new mustang allows you to customize the colour of the lighting. I wouldn't mind seeing this show up on other cars, I thought it was a good idea.

I understand your point - I'm not arguing if it's the best for the low light, but if other people find it causes other reactions. For me, seeing red lights made me constantly think of two things: stop lights and warning/engine lights. For the few months I had the car, my brain/reflexes kept telling me "STOP! Something's wrong!"

Not to the point of impairment obviously, but it became something I disliked about the car. For me, green lighting says "go" and "everything is okay with the car."

I still like the old white/black set-up. Easy and familure. I think the classiest looking gauges are white face with the black numbers with a really nice artistic font. As a matter of fact the Chysler 300M (I think this is the car) has some of the nicest gauges out there.

I have never really been a big fan of the Bimmer red..but it has never really bothered me all that much. At first it looks very aircraft cockpit. But after a while it becomes like anything else.

I had pure red gauges in my STI.

Apart from the bright rev-meter light flickering when you hit the redline, i didnt take much notice of the rest of them.

I find that blue/white/green gauges are more soothing though.

Had them in the M3/4, and they weren't bad.

Can't see the gauges for **** in the 365 at night. Mongo is a little better, but not much.

Red light is used in ships and aircraft cockpits, it helps keep your eyes from closing down when you glance down. The looks are one thing, red light is safer for night driving than white light.

I never really liked driving my NSX at night, just too dark inside for me, but now that I think about it I don't really care for the red lights much either. Nothing too big or anything just a little uncomfortable.....but now it'll probualy be bothering me....dammit grrrrr

But, anyway I think the best are the simple black and white ones, and blues ok too. I would think that the "warning/caution" colors wouldn't be used, but I'll survive :)

My 86 Mustang GT had them and I liked them. My S2000 has a dimmer for the dash lights which I think is a great idea as you can adjust the brightness.

BMW's amber was researched to not cause pupil dialation at night.

They also have ambient lighting on the ~95 and newer models, it is the same color and does not effect night blindess, etc.

The same reason amber or red light is used by both pilots and astromers.

I find the white or green to cause some night blindenss, not something I want in a vehicle at night.

I do like VW's blue, but I turn it down.
