First-off, my apologies if this comes off bigotive or intolerant in any way. Certainly not who I am. I am just amazed that people are still preyed upon with "ethnic" tactics.

Within 5 minutes of getting home last night, my doorbell rings. I open the door to find myself almost word-for-word listening to the Orlando Jones character from Office Space trying to sell magazine subscriptions. The delivery was in fluent street and the outfit was clean yet charmingly hodgepodge. Barely any eye contact, shuffly feet, the whole bit.

The warmup was a competition between recent high-school graduates to get credits for human contact and social interaction. They are all from Atlanta and visiting DC for the first time.

Aw... C'Mon... Pity sales. The lowest.

After getting over feeling like I'm a piece of **** for turning this guy away, I actually got a little sad. The time spent on the outfit, delivery, and number of miles walked between houses would have been better spent in getting a real job.

Are we all still looking for the easy way out? Hard as it is sometimes, I actually enjoy a challenges at work or at home, and I realize that the more of them that I overcome, the better I am as a person, to my family, and to the company that lets me work for them.

Is it Do-to-do, or is it more like "doe-dah-doe"?:)

The "barely-any-eye-contact" and shuffly feet are a clear indication that it is, in fact, not an "easy way out". Peddling wares door to door sucks. Anyone who does it, learns that, at the very latest, after the first day.

Who knows why people do the things they do. Perhaps he is moonlighting as a magazine subscription salesperson when not working at his other job. Perhaps there is no one to tell him his poor attire is the reason he can't obtain another job. There are far too many factors to consider, rendering any assumptions futile.

Perhaps next time, you could be the one to take a few minutes to tell the young man at your door that his posture could be better, his eye contact more steady and his attire less casual. Done with sincerity, it might just make a difference in someone's life.

Appreciated. Kinda shames me to have forgotten that good decisions come from looking at both sides. Honest intentions or not from the salesman, I look like the shmuck for ranting and closing off.

Lesson here: Think before you thread. Sorry y'all. Not the way this was intended...

I don't think anyone saw it in any other way but the way you did intend it... There's nothing wrong with a rant; I was just offering an alternative point of view - as is Urotrash - and both could be just as valid...
