I'm going to send my 308 diff to a guy that makes racing Porsche diff's just to have a look. Are TR diff's becoming hard to find? If so if someone's got one kicking we should send one to him also. Report back if these are becoming hard to find. I think one of the parts guys I deal with would consider sending him one since he specifically mentioned the TR diff being unique or breaking? cheers, Sean
Now I remember ... it's the carrier that breaks 'cause it's a weldment and guys upgrade to an F40 diff or something like that right? Any thoughts about an aftermarket model for these? Guard transmission is the guy I'm talking to and his Porsche parts are kick butt! No affiliation he's just been really helpful for advice on my 308 diff's. cheers
The upgrade is to a one piece differential out of a VERY late 512TR or any 512M. There is a an aftermarket piece being manufactured in Australia, all of the above come at a steep price.
The prices vary depending on source and condition. Call T Rutlands or Ricambi. They can give you a ballpark cost of a unit, IF you can find one. They didn't make that many 'M' units to begin with.. The few people I've talked to that have had the work done, repairs including labor seem to run from 12k to 15k. Rifledriver (Brian Crall) has probably done a few of these. Even doing the work yourself I am thinking you would be lucky to get by for much less than 10k on this. I hope I never have the misfortune to split the one in my car.
I'd bought one of their units a few years ago for one of my Audis - wouldn't quite fit in the pumpkin because of the R&P difference, but the piece was amazingly beautiful - really a shame to hide it inside the diff. The design, construction and quality are top notch, and I inquired about doing one for the Boxer guys. They will need an intact unit to work off of, but can do it, and probably for considerably less than Rutlands or Ricambi (my 944/A4 unit was something like $2K). It's a Ramp-Type LSD, and can be set-up for different lock/unlock characteristics. The Porsche and Audi guys love them, Stasis runs them in their Race Audis. BTW - in the end, when the unit wouldn't fit, Mike and Paul found a buyer for it, so my "experiment" cost me little more than the shipping and labor at my local shop. http://www.guardtransmission.com/lsd_info.htm
