I've always filled the 355 up with Optimax, a habit i've adopted with all my cars. However with the premium now being 8p a litre at my nearest shell garage i'm wondering whether it's entirely necessary? I'm just a little reluctant to chuck in boggo fuel to see if it runs as well?

Anyone done a more scientific test as regards peformance / engine wear?

    Stuh,

Tesco near me now stock 99RON Superplus which is the same or 1 higher octane rating than Optimax, and I chuck in some Millers Octane Boost for an alleged 2 more, so that's 101 rating if you believe the guff. Have to say it's been more willing of late. And you get clubcard points :D

Optimax all the time both the 360 and the CSL - they're doing double Shell points on Optimax at the moment (nearly saved enough for my Ferrari jacket)

i would like to hear someone who understands this properly, unlike me, to give an opinion. Octane rating is a measurement of at what compression the fuel will self ignite/detonate - a higher octane rating means the fuel will self ignite at a higher pressure. Hence high compression ratio engines in sports cars require higher octane fuel.

HOWEVER, from my limited knowledge i thought that

    a) there is no point using a higher octane fuel then required (95 ron modern ferraris - tho there may be exceptions-enzo?) as the engine is tuned for 95

    b) the use of a higher octane fuel than required will result in unburned fuel in the exhaust/emissions system. This doesnt sound good.

I haven't used it, I just use plain old unleaded in all my cars.
I still avoid Shell petrol whenever I can, 'cos I'm old enough to remember their last technological breakthrough....Formula Shell.
Anyone else remember it, it was the stuff that burnt out valves!;)

I once ran an Alfa (Sprint Green Cloverleaf - sounded great and drove well too) and the service guys asked if I used Shell as the carbs were getting gunked up...sure enough, I was.

Optimax seems to be decent fuel though.

I don't fret if I can't find Optimax, but use it if it's available when I need to fill up (which is often!). But I do make sure I use Super Unleaded unless it's absolutely impossible to do so, and if I can't get it, I don't put a full tank in (just enough to get me somewhere decent that has decent fuel).

I don't believe using Optimax or high octane fuel will damage cars that run highly tuned and are used as intended (which is why Dale puts normal u/l in his. If olive oil were cheaper he'd be able to use that :) ).

Do you operate the same principle for both the 355 and the Daytona?

Yes. Although I also put additive in the Daytona - I was advised 1 bottle of Millers CVL every other tank, but have been known to chuck one in each tank full (Millers recommends diluting it 1 bittle for every 40 litres - the Daytona's tank is 126 litres so onne bottle every two tanks doesn't seem right).

Note that I haven't (yet) been caught with no possibility of super u/l at the moment, but Optimax (the recommended juice) isn't always available.

    Si,

96.9p per litre (that's at today's rate).... bound to go up soon :(

There's a garage about 5 miles from me selling "old money" 4 star at "new money" prices, 137 per litre. Anyone think it's worth buying?

    Hello.

There is no overall benefit in using Optimax.

The comments so far are correct.

We had a large debate on one of the Mitsubishi Websites in relation to the Evo.

It was settled when a fuel and oil expert treated us to pictures and a 6 page essay on the subject.

If I can find the post I will forward it through!

    Many thanks, Chris.

My BM CSL (and my old Coupe) definately runs better using Optimax, don't really notice any difference in the 360.

Interested to see this article - I would have thought that turbo charged cars would have seen noticeable differences using Optimax.

Maybe we're all just marketing departments dream customers.

M3s are built to run on higher octane petrol. The manual tells you that they will run on lower octane but will be slower and use more fuel.

I have never been sure whether my car has hardened valve seats or not - so to be on the safe side I have always stuck in 4 star leaded. Filled up on Thursday - 1.22 a litre. The hairs on the back of my neck raise when the Pounds whizz round faster than the litres on the pump!

I have put Optimax in the Ferrari but it doesn't really need it 308gt4 runs a low compression ratio but I don't mine as small annual mileage. However I have experimented with different fuel in my everyday car Saab 9000 Aero. They (Saab) advise it to be run on higher octane I do notice a big difference when running Super to normal unleaded. Optimax does offer better performance and consumption as recorded on the boost guage and fuel computer. The worst fuel is Tesco's car runs poor and consumption alot higher than other standard unleaded fuel

I put in any Superunleaded I can find. I have to admit to trying to use Optimax where possible, but have never noticed any benefit. In Switzerland it was 100 Octane and didn't feel any different either.

Paid 1.04p per litre in BP yesterday, the thieving b@stards.

    PS:

I had a chat with the guys that develop EMS for Jag / Land Rover at work a while ago, and if memory serves me well, they said that I wouldn't notice any difference between super and normal unleaded in terms of performance or engine life.

I always use Optimax and have noticed a difference in repsonsiveness.
EVO Magazine did a test with Optimax in a few cars and then the engine were stripped. Great Article and they found the cars will a littkle quicker too.
