I was recently showing a buddy of mine a video I took of my Dane, and he asked me what was up with the baby talk towards my dog........ So I asked him if he talks to his dog the same way he would a co-worker......? I guess maybe he wouldn't feel like a "man" if he did......

I "baby talk" to my dogs. They certainly react more to a voice with emotional backing versus just talking to them like I was talking to an adult human.

If they aren't understanding your words, they are definitely picking up on the tone and reacting to that. At least that is what I experience.

Yep, guilty as well. Although its not often I certainly do it. Typically lying down in bed when petting him. I think it's completely normal and if anyone says they don't I'm calling out LIAR :)

Most people refer to their pets like children, and since they never really 'grow up' it should continue for the life of the pet.

I don't necessarily use 'baby talk', but in thinking about it, I realized I do use a limited vocabulary.

I talk to our Shih Tzu the same way, but then again break out he same voice sometimes to adults when they act like children.

    The dog likes it better...

I don't use "Baby Talk" but let my words and my tone of voice know they are getting some luvin. I believe if someone gets to lovey dovey they loose their edge in being the "pack leader". I show my effection to them by holding them and petting them. Neither way is right or wrong and we all have a different approach.

    Maybe I spoke too soon?

Got a 1 year old cat, still pretty much acts like a kitten, she either gets drilled with angry talk for being incredibly naughty or gets huge amounts of love & baby talk when being cute & cuddly... Funnily enough my partner can't help but treat her like a baby, literally, which is strange to me, but whatever, women pfft.

Yeah I do, but it does feel weird to admit.

Even though this is all one big family on here. :)

quelle horreur! Baby talk to pets? Girly men?

That said......I think it's actually more the tone of voice/body language, not so much the 'baby-talk' words....

At least for our 2 elderly Burmese cats; it hardly makes any difference what words I say; it's much more my tone/volume/actions that clues them into: stick around for strokes, or head for under the chair. I can utter a string of 4-letter words in an affectionate voice and they know treats are forthcoming!

+1 what he said. It's like nails on a chalkboard.
Some people do it with a less obnoxious tone than others, but the worst offenders need to keep that crap to themselves and their pet.

I do every now & then if I'm playing with him, but most of the time I just speak to him in a regular voice... "OK dog, come on inside." or what have you.
