I’m a new owner so I don’t get it... is this button or fog lights on general prone to breaking? Or is this cynicism implicating overall fragility of the TR?
The button - if you do a search on the PN "121607", you should get some threads showing the internals (so the switch breaking is not a subject that has never come up before). It's actually a self-latching relay with a lot of small fiddly little components inside. I've never liked (what I consider) the poor tactile-feedback of mine.
Good to know!! I never use it because the light on the center console is too bright for night driving, another good reason to not turn it on. Is the rear window switch the same?? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
When you're driving your Testarossa on the streets of Florida, you definitely need the fogs for that extra "bling" effect. As for the switch, it's the best exercise in over engineering resulting in a overly complicated solution for something simple. Because the power wires run through the switch, the crappy plastic plug connector melts and transfers the heat to the switch itself. I snipped off the plug and used heavier wire and gold plated high end audio spades to the switch. Fogs are on every night and daily driven....no issues for 12k miles since the modification. I didn't know it was a latching relay. That explains a lot. For the twice a decade I use it I suppose it will last a long time.
Shamile, I will have to try that fix. I started using mine every day a few years ago then one day the switch melted and blew a fuse. That wake-up call caused me to send my Fusebox to Dave Helms for repair and I haven't tried it since. I haven't had any Electrical problems either. thanks for the tip. I would recomend to anyone who was going to use the Fog Lights daily to keep Marshmallows' and Hot Dogs handy!
I have an issue with the fog light switch in an 83 QV Cab that I believe also uses part number 121607. I turned on the fog lights for the first time in a long time and within a few short minutes the switch started to melt. A tab on the back of the switch is burned and the harness is slightly melted at the same contact area. I think the fog lights were fairly dim when on as well. Did the switch fail and cause the meltdown or is the plastic harness the fault? If I am able to locate a replacement switch I certainly don't want to melt that one. Then if I cut out the harness and use spade connectors will that eliminate the heat problem at the harness?
there have been dirt and dust in the switch and so no right connection and it burns try at a BMW dealer, the 2500 and 2800 had the same switches. green and yellow
Thanks for the info I'll look into that. I will also make sure everything is clean when installing the new switch.
