Do you know what does really mean the S in GTS?

    Hi,
    I always heard the S in GTS means SPIDER.
    I doesn't make sense to me as the GTS is not a spider, and a spider is another model.

    The other day I found out by accident the real mean of the S in GTS.
    At least what I think it is...:)

    It is much more logical than the "spider" definition.
    But before giving it away, I'm just curious if anyone else know this?
    I searched the word here and surprisingly it gave no results.
    So maybe I'm wrong.
    Let's find out...

    So what do you think the S is meaning in GTS?

    As long I have known that nomenclature it was: GTB--Berlinetta (coupe/hardtop) GTS--Spyder (open top/convertible). Kinda makes sense when you look at either type of car and its designation: 308GTB/308GTS. Simple.

    This what I heard too, but...
    With the 348 and the arrival of the Spider model, it doesn't make sense.
    My explanation is much more logical.
    I'll wait a little more to see if anyone finds out...

    OK, what do you think about "Scopribile" ?
    It means "discovered".
    As the GTS is the car you can remove the "cover", it sounds much more logical than spider or sport.

    Any Italian speaking person who can confirm this hypothesis?

    That makes no sense at all it alway was Spider you can hear it at every auction and in all the brochures

    Yes I know, S is supposed to stand for Spider, I wrote it in the first message. :)
    But were is the logic to have a F355 Gran Turismo Spider model when there is a F355 spider model beside?
    Spider body is usually a 2 seated convertible (as the F355 Spider). The GTS is a coupe with removable targa top, hence the word "Scopribile" I suggest...
    Again, any Italian speaking person could confirm this word could be used this way or if it's not a correct use?

    I don’t know how credible that source is, although I agree that the “S” in GTS is for Spider, but the reference does not include a meaning for a solo “S”. I have always believed that an S by itself signifies “Sport.”

    But to the OP’s point…GTS….it’s Spider. In 40 years of reading about Ferraris I never saw the word scopribile until now. :rolleyes:

    As far as the 355 goes Ferrari was very specific. A GTS is a GTS. A Spider is a Spider.

    I was at too many factory functions and heard the explanation far too many times to sit here and have someone redefine it because he is confused.

    Many racing models have S for Sport in their name. It references the Italian use of the word Sport to refer to the Sport of Racing.
    I defy you to find any Ferrari literature referring to a Street model with the S to mean Sport.
