This is a question that has come up and i have thought about with other car fanatics....is having an exotic that is not an everyday car{ and most are not used that way}enough to satisfy your sports car lust, or do you also need an everyday sports carto drive more often worry free....i know that ideally most people would drive their exotics everywhere and all the time , without car about the mileage or getting a parking lot ding.....but usually is not the case...a ferrari with 30k miles is high mileage, a porsche is low mileage....so would it be better to a buy a less expensive exotic and budget some money for an everyday sports car, like a vette, 911, z06, or just get one more expensive higher performing exotic ...for example, do you get a 360 and a z06, or a 430? your thoughts?????

Only if the exotic is a supercar like an Enzo, 288, etc. I would hope if you have a 3*8, 355, 360, 550 etc. you drive it every sunny day there is. Unless you're hauling furniture or passengers, you should enjoy the ride!

If I had an Enzo, I'd use a CS as a daily driver.

I promised myself I would not drive a dull car... what is the point of having an exotic if your daily driver is a Yugo... I do it within my means. My daily driver a year ago was a 1991 Porsche 911 (964). I still have that car but got a VWR32 that shares daily driver rights with the 911. In my case I need the rear seats for the kids... so a two seater will not be an option for many years to come...

So to your point, I would try to have something fun, sporty as a daily driver... something you like, of course, but it has to move your senses...

Yes I do, and it is an E-500 Benz. I am in utility construction, installing water, sewer, and drainage lines, and have to go on the jobsites with my cars. The E-class with the air suspension, can raise itself 1" which makes a big difference. I would hate to think of my 355 trying to make it across one of these development sites, as it's tough not to bottom out on regular roads. The E has great torque, and plenty fast for everyday travel.

good point, but there many people with 355 and 360 and 550s, diablos, murcis, etc, who dont use them everyday...most people dont put 5k miles a year on these cars...a lot of owners dont put 1k miles a year...just look at the mileage on used ferraris....how many 355s have over 30k miles on them...even most 1995s dont...30 k miles over 10 year s is 3k a year and this is on a high mileage car!!!!driving one of these cars is not like driving a porsche, a vette, etc...there are issues with people looking at and touching the car, parking lot dings that hurt the resale value, hitting a city pot hole and causing thousands of dollars of damage, etc...

Hmm. Well I drive a Jeep Liberty as my errand runner/airport parking/etc. car, because when it gets bumped I don't lose sleep about it. I like to have one low, fast sports car and a small SUV. The Jeep's fun to drive in its own way. It also cements my '96 911 cabrio's status as the serious fun car - fast, open top, sounds great, etc.

The 911 isn't exotic, but it's pretty much in perfect condition and has low, fair-weather-only mileage, and it would lose a lot of resale if I piled on the miles or let it get parking lot rash. Very nice 993's seem to be worth hanging onto. Anyway I would need to be a lot wealthier than I am to sacrifice that one to commuting, the seagulls hovering over our airport parking and the fender-bending stop and go traffic jams we have in SoCal.

My definition of an everyday car is a throwaway appliance. Jeep, Camry, Accord, BMW 3 (sorry - owned one of those too, they're everywhere), SUV, etc. Ferrari's are all rare and, if kept up, destined to be somewhat collectible. Porsches and Corvettes also seem to have a special market among car enthusiasts -- people who shop for pristine, low mileage cars. (I admit I'm not a Corvette fan, but I'm impressed when I see the perfection of how a lot of them are maintained.)

So, I treat the 911 like I plan to treat my Ferrari when I find the right one. If I wanted a daily driver sports car, I'd get a used Z3, Z4 or Miata. With two garage spaces only, I guess the 1 sports car + 1 SUV equation is working fine for me. Who needs the additional maintenance and expense? I'd get a boat first.

well said jon, everyones definition will vary...your 911 is a great car,and it could be used as an everyday sports car or a special occassion car...but you could put tons of miles on your 911 and it wouldnt hurt its resale the way it would on a ferrari or lambo...my cousin put 489k miles on his 1984 911 cab!!! i would try that on a lambo or ferrari...btw, how many miles a year do you drive the 911???

I drive almost 30,000 miles per year. I used to drive an SUV, but switched to a Mini Cooper last August. I guess it's not what you might classify as a sports car, but it is fun to drive and saves lots of natural resources.

I wish I could have another sports car to complement my 308. But, with limited funds it's not possible. I have a 94 Camry with 49k miles and a 05 Dodge Magnum Hemi with 400 miles (super car and really fast). Would I like a Porsche...yes. But the Magnum is a little more family friendly and with a little one due in 56 days...it functional and fun.

I don't currently own an exotic but when I did in the past I always drove a beater for everyday. One day I would be at my bank with a beat up van and even though I dress fairly well that would treat me like trailer trash. When I would pull up with my 308 or 911 Turbo that would treat me much better. People in this town are very superficial. What can you expect I live in tinseltown.

My commute in LA is about six blocks and the wife works two blocks from me so I take her most mornings and drop off, then to my office. We switch off between the 380SL and her Boxster S as a daily, but if I have a meeting away from the office and it is a nice day I will drive the 348. The Boxster is the "utility car" as the top doesn't leak.

If I need a truck I rent from Budget at Union Station - easy to get to for me and a rental you can drive the living **** out of and then just give it back.

I, too, decided I wanted cars I wanted and all of ours are toys, but they all get driven including the 348. I'd drive the 348 to work more often but it needs longer than it takes to get to work to warm up...

    Cheers
    Kevin

My TT is my daily. Ideally I would love to have a 6.0 next to it as the weekend car. Too bad finances don't allow for such opulence at the current time.

Now if I was as rich as Ralph, my life would be different :)

When I was single and in my 20's. 97-00 At the time I had a 348ts as my exotic and I had a 94 corvette as my daily driver, both bright red, My employees used to say it must suck to be you. To say every morning, Do you want to drive the corvette or the ferrari today.

Now in my 30's my wife will not agree to me having two sports cars, I had a big plan to get one last year but wives always seem to throw in a wrench. So I am going underground and will buy one of them new body style corvettes as soon as I can find one for around 40K (I hate spending 10k just to be the first on the block). I am gonna tell her, It was too good a deal to pass up. Hope she dosent cry this time.
