Hi what i really want to know is are you guys interested ion the 18" Pirelli P-ZERO system? https://www.longstonetyres.co.uk/pirelli-collezione/p-zero.html that is where they do the directionale tyre on the front: Image Unavailable, Please Login And the P-Zero Assimetrico for the rear Image Unavailable, Please Login Now i dont think i need to translate this into English, but i will just show off what a cunning lingusit i am: Directionale means Directional Assimetrico means a asymmetric Any way they are pretty cool and we have them for the TestaRossa in 16". However the question is if we got a fresh batch of the 225/40R18 P-Zero Directionale made would you buy them? (i beleve the 265/40R18 P-Zero Assimetric is available too.) The the other thing is what do you know about original equipment tyres? What do we know about which brand and tread pattern were original on the 348 and 355? i have done a web page on the 348:- https://www.longstonetyres.co.uk/classic-car-tyres/ferrari/348.html I think the 348 originally fitted the Pirelli P-Zero, but assimetric front and rear 215/50R17 front and 255/45R17 rear, i think some cars fitted Bridgestone RE71 in 17" as well. Then i think they did the 348 GT Competizioni which fitted this exact P-Zero system: Directionale 225/40R18 P-Zero A front and 265/40R18 P-Zero D rear. I havent really looked into the 355 yet, but what do you know about whats original? and do you have any pictures of window stickers and cars in show rooms on their original tyres ideally with a bit of steering lock on.
I had new ( in date by 3/4 months ) Michelin PS ‘s fitted to my 348 on OEM 17 inch wheels last December 24 . Fronts are PS 5 s and rears PS 4 ?…or the other way round . Anyhow not exactly the same vs . Speaking to various car guys , clubs , forums the Michelin pilot sports if you can get them in your size ( in 348 case 17 s ) are the go to tyre . I have them on my boxster and agree . Had Pirellis p zeros on my Bentley GT . The negative with todays Pirelli P zeros is they arn’t so good in the wet , damp and cold . Fine in dry and when hot . The Michelin PS are safer in cold , wet , and damp from the get go . No waiting for them to warm up . When they do warm up they just grip more . As far as car clubby shows I am not really bothered if my 348 hasn’t got Pirellis that sync with the door jam sticker . Bcz if it rains I know I will get home . Times change and currently the Michelin Pilot sport is the new kid on the block . There’s a ongoing thread on “ piston heads “ boxster page titled “ aqua planning boxsters “ Loads do esp on motorways…..in the U.K. winter ! Not saying they are on Pirellis but why opt into a tyre with a know poor , cold weather rep ?
FYI.. Seems like most of the American market Spiders I checked (on BaT) had Bridgestones supplier. All car manufacturers strike deals with suppliers esp the tyres . It’s not unusual for them to switch suppliers during a modal run or indeed spec different tyre manufacturers for different markets . Stroll into any BMW , Merc or Porsche dealer and look closely at the 20-30 new vehicles in the show room . Or the 100 cars inc used on the pitch .All different tyre manufacturers on various modals . Ferrari are no exception. As I said times and flavour s change . It’s inconceivable that a car ( my 358 sp ) manufactured in 1994 , that the then chosen tyres the P zeros are still the go to tyre ? As if the rivals , the pecking order hasn’t changed in decades later . Also I guess the compound evolves . Current P zero compound as I say is tricky in cold damp conditions. Michelin Pilot sports currently occupy the top spot on the podium. They have toppled Pirelli P zeros . Who knows for how long ?
Thank you Johnk and ChoonHound That is great stuff. love those wondow and door card stickers. nice clear evidence. there is a possibility we could get Pirelli to make a batch of the front 18" P-Zero tyres again if there is a demand for them, so it would be a new batch. What we do know is that the current range of Pirelli Collezione tyres are useing exceptional compounds that perform fabulously in the wet. If you look at this tyre test results, OK it was done on an E-type that is much older, however the compounds that Pirelli Collezione are using are phenominal. Look at the wet performance of the P5 tyre; it is next to perfect, and for such an old tyre design, to perform so well in that wet test is exemplary, because the tread of these old tyres does not have the advantages for wet use of computer modeling that modern yres have wich is powerful in moving water. It is the compound that is lifting them above those modern tyres: the Vredestein, the Dunlop Sport Classic and that Radar thing. Image Unavailable, Please Login JohnK and Cuneo just so i understand, could i ask why you would not buy the P-Zero system if Pirelli made a fresh batch?
I’ve had about 5 sets of Pirellis over the years on different cars (bmw, McLaren, Porsche) and never liked the wet or dry handling of them. Maybe things are different now but I’m not going to drop 2k to find out, so will stick with Michelin ps Cup2’s on the Ferraris, Porsches, and Mac, and yoke ad-09 on my nsxs. I don’t care about tire originality in the slightest obviously, but understand others do.
