I was wondering if you guys wash ,wax and/or detail your car with your own hands as I actually enjoy detailing my toys (non-ferrari) by myself and it's very rewarding to sit and relax staring at how shiny it gets after wax beautifyng your car is almost like making love to it IMO. also it keeps looking like new in the process I can't blame you if you prefer to take it to your local auto detail shop as it's chic . but I wonder if Ferrari owners enjoy taking care of their cars as much as I do.
YES I DO! I have to drive on a gravel road 1/4 mile. So I use a California Duster every time I drive. I also ues Meguiar's Quick Detailer in between washes. I use Turtle Wax Black when I am waxing the whole car. Also note I have 2 California Dusters at a time the oldest 1 for the rear and the newest 1 for the rest of the car. Big Lots have them for $6 and I buy 4 at a time. I also use a Mr Clean filter on the water for washing 3 buckets 2 mittens and micrfiber towels. stephen
I would say most owners in my area wash and wax our own cars. It's likely most FChatters do too. It's never a chore cleaning a Ferrari. I take my car to my pro detailer once a year, not because it's chic (don't know why you'd say that), but because they could get my car absolutely factory clean right down to the undertrays. Rest of the year, I just wash and wax as needed to maintain the shine.
I wash it - it's enjoyable, because it gives me an excuse to stare at the car for an hour. I have a skilled detailer do the claying/buffing -- I don't trust myself on dark cars, especially Ferrari's.
the cars are parked at my parents' house and their driveway is sooo steep that i can't park the cars on there. so i can't even admire the cars on the driveway! travesty! i'd wash them myself but i wouldn't wax them myself. not so good at waxing. john
I also use a California Duster every time I drive and use Meguiar's Quick Detailer in between washes because I only wash the car once a year. All roads in my area are paved and for the most part I only need to deal with dust. I don't drive in the rain so the dirt is minor. As for my other daily drivers I usuall take them to the car wash once a week. Enjoy the ride
Exactly what I do. I have only had my 355 since November 21st 2005, and have not washed it yet even though I drove over 1200 miles with it. I totally detailed it myself using a Porter Cable buffer with foam pads and Meguiar's NXT cleaner and then wax. I use the NXT quick detalier for any types of spots I get on the car and use a California car duster after every drive. Also clean wheels with quick detalier pretty much every time I drive. No, I do not drive it in the rain. That's what the benz sedan and suv are for! gordon
My dad is nuts about his cars. It seems like he waxes the murcielago every other weekend when I see him, and he's always spending time in the garage. He's always been into keeping his cars pristine back before he was my age. The last show he entered, I think the '04 French Quarter Classic, he got the "platinum" award for his 550 after spending a couple weeks cleaning every last speck out of the wheel wells. . . I rarely ever see him pull a car into the garage unless he just washed it. I've got him hooked on NXT Tech Wax after he saw me using it on my Civic, and I think he uses a meguiar's clay too (but only on the cars that need it). Check out autopia.org, those guys are truly insane about their cars. edit: Oh and don't fear claying, as long as you don't drop the clay on the ground or something you really can't go wrong. The clay is not an abrasive, it merely picks up the particles and oxidation from the paint. Just keep the surface wet (soapy water, speed shine, actual clay lube, doesn't matter) and remember to knead and fold the clay every now and then when it gets dirty. Depending on how bad your paint is it'll feel like sandpaper pulling the crap out of your paint until the clay just glides across the surface when it's completely clean. It's not difficult at all, and you're not going to rub into your paint like you would with abrasive polishes. There's plenty of topics on it on autopia.org and just about everyone recommends it highly. When I had my '91 Acura Legend I took grainy, rough feeling paint and made it feel like glass again. But even my dad's Maranello benefitted from the clay. For first time users you'll be amazed by how well it works (well, unless you already have flawless smooth paint ).
I wash my own car, but use Bob for the detailing which I do about once a year. I think most owners wash their own, and some detail, but I suspect that most get a professional for the detailing, when they want a really nice looking car. Art
I take the Honda to a drive-thru car wash, but the Ferrari I wash (and occasionally wax) by myself in the driveway. At 44" high, it's a breeze to wash, except for those persnickety louvers.
I can't standing washing cars for some reason. I hate working on cars also. I don't know why, I really try to enjoy it but get bored after a few minutes. Don't have a Ferrari but figure my old Maserati would count
I don't have a Ferrari yet, but I wash my own car. In fact, since I bought it new over 2 years ago, I'm the only one (beside the dealer) who has washed it. I usually spend 2 hours or so on it, and try to do it once a week. It's relaxing, and I feel good when it's done. My second car hasn't been washed in over 2 years. It's fun having two cars - one you could care less about, and another that you take great care of. I use mostly Meguiar's products and microfiber towels.
I wash my four vehicles every saturday...The Srt-4 and Motorcycle are usually washed at least twice a week(or if I'm going out for the night or for a hill country cruise). My saturdays will burn at least 8 hours to wash all four. My motorcycle(2004 VTX1300S) has taken me at least 4 hours numerous times when I decide to take off all the covers(including the fuel tank). Car cleaning seems like therapy after a full detail....The shine makes it worth it: Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
i always seem to have "help" when washing my cars. trouble is though, they seem to have a hard time not getting all wet when they help though Image Unavailable, Please Login
I use Zaino products on the Ferrari, C320C and SLK350. I clean the entire cars - interior, exterior, wheels and clean them after use prior to putting on the car covers. My Chevy 4x4 trucks go to the .50 car wash most of the time unless I use the Mr. Clean thingie on them - I do my DuraMax one by hand when I have my big trailer hitched to wash (it's the only thing "detailed" around here - being aluminum, it gets an acid wash once a year). I'd rather use the money for detailing the cars for an airline ticket to Europe. Carol
What a waste of time! You guys have not experienced the enlightenment of those among us whose cars have the 'protective filth' layer which keeps bugs and bird crap and more off the paint. Why wash ever? I always say. . .
I wash my 348 every week or so and polish it once a month. I do enjoy washing the car also. I use meguires car wash and auto-glim polish. That polish is unbelievable
Well i have 3 Ferrari's The 348 and the 355 get driven at least twice a week, and they are very well taken care of. The 1994 348 Coupe i wash with my son sometimes and by myself sometimes, its an easy car and he likes to help, so its all good. The 1999 355 Spider, I wash this usually once a month and wax 4 times a year with Zaino. I am the ONLY one that washes this, i had to get a fender repainted last time my wife helped me wash it, as she had a diamond ring that got turned wrong ways and made a HUGE scratch, she cried, i almost did. But it was fixed with VERY high quality paint and matches perfectly. Then their is my prized possession, my garage queen, my 1995 512M, I keep tihs on the lift in my garage, this car has 329 miles and its ABSOLUTLEY perfect, as most of you know why. It gets washed once a year, waxed, driven around the block a couple of times, and put back in my garage under cover. I know its meant to be driven, but i keep this as my keepsake that will belong to my son someday. It was my first Ferrari, and will be my sons first as well.
