I was told by one of the women who works at the upholstery department at S.F. that it is highly recommended to wear soft-skin leather gloves when driving F cars.
The leather on the steering wheel is very delicate, and tends to wear out quickly when in contact/rubbing with bare hands. No rocket science here, and I always put them on before even starting the engine. Have two pairs. One is full hand, and second set fingerless. Yet, I am

No, I wear gloves when I drive my John Deere 4020 tractor. :)

Actually, I've always wondered if it would be fun to wear driving gloves while driving a sports car.
I've seen various ads for deer skin driving gloves.

For example, here is an eBay ad for deer-skin gloves:
    http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Driving-Gloves-Black-Deerskin-by-Wheelskins-Large_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ6753QQihZ012QQitemZ220167072267QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW

You also see driving gloves made out of leather, goat skin, sheep skin, lamb skin, etc.
Any recommendations on the best type of gloves to buy?

No I don't wear gloves. They are not comfortable to wear in the California heat.

I didnt know about the wear on the steering wheel from hands vs leather but I wear half-gloves to help improve the grip of the steering wheel. My 308 QV is very hard to turn at parking-lot-speed (old/hard tires are part of the problem). The gloves help with it.

I do notice some wear on the steering wheel from the previous owner, but its also an 23 year old car.

Whoever said the leather is delicate is probably just saying it to make drama, or encourage the purchase of officially licensed Ferrari driving gloves. ;) Unless, of course, they are using splits instead of the top grain, but I wouldn't expect that on something so expensive. If it were delicate, all of the 20 year old Ferrari/Momo/Nardi steering wheels would be just a steel and foam core by now!

I don't think there is a need to wear gloves while driving a road car unless the steering wheel is cold. The whole point of the leather-wrapped steering wheel is for good feel, grip, and comfort in your bare hands.

How well the leather is kept comes down to how clean your hands (or gloves) are every time you use it, and if you keep it out of direct sun, elements, etc.

The leather between your hands and the wheel is a "consumable", like tires.

In the old days, the wheel was varnished wood, and the leather was on your hands.
Today, the leather covers the wheel -- to hide the cheap plastic. ;)

I wore out the leather wheel cover on my Celica AllTrac in 15 years -- but that was mostly the effect of water and humidity on rainy days, combined with winter gloves (and snow) in winter.

I've gone through four or five sets of driving gloves on my '79 Alfa (wood wheel).

The Ferrari's leather cover is fine -- I only wear gloves when I've left the top off in summer, and the (black) wheel cover is too hot to handle.

I'd suspect that wearing leather gloves would wear out a leather wheel cover faster. (Unless you only drive your car in a controlled humidity climate.) There's a lot more stuff in the real world to bother leather than just the "oils" on your hands.

That about sums it up for gloves and road cars.

I only wear gloves when mandated by a racing sanction.

I never wear gloves except when below freezing. I don't want anything between me, my fine Italian leather covered Momos (in 3 of my 4 sports cars), & my driving experience. The mahogany Dino wheel in the RX-7 is the only exception.

    I'm not a *****, so NO, I don't wear driving gloves.

The glove wearing types are the ones who are first on the dance floor when YMCA comes on! ;-) (You know who you are).
