I'm considering getting a doberman and I'd like feedback from owners.

    Thanks

Not an owner but my close friend years ago had a houseful, like half a dozen. They were raised as regular dogs, not attack killers, and they were the sweetest and nicest dogs you'd ever want to meet. Very smart too. Dobermans are on my short list for when I have a place where I can have a dog.

We used to have two when I was 5-6, I used to try to ride it around like a horse but it never attacked any of us. It did try to kill the mailman though and one day for some strange reason he ran at full force into a wall outside which put a huge lump on his head. He shortly dissapeared after that but they seem to be good dogs, I'll ask my Uncle if I see him again, he knows a bit about them.

used to a long time ago....extremely high strong and can be intimidating to strangers but they are truly good dogs.

just don't chop off their tails....that seems cruel, IMHO.

I had three growing up. All of them were very sweet and never attempted to hurt anyone. They were brought up as regular house pets not attack dogs.

I had a couple growing up and I agree, they can be very sweet dogs. That said, they can also be rather stubborn and sometimes hard to train/master. They're absolutely not for the "I don't really discipline my dog" set. They tend to be vocal, which isn't exactly always comfortable for the visitor and can be annoying for the owner. Also, they're big dogs, and, like all big dogs, discipline is important so they don't jump on guests and/or yank your arms out of their sockets while on walks. Lastly, they need exercise. The more, the better. (Training the dog can help burn off some of the pent-up energy)

These things said, they are wonderfully intelligent, very happy to learn, and unbelievably loyal. Great with kids. They're terrific dogs.

One last caveat: like most purebreds, they're prone to inbreeding. Be careful when buying - they can have all sorts of ailments if inbred.

They are wonderful, strong, loyal dogs which require discipline and continual training because they believe you work for them. Ours is now 7 months old, weighs 79 pounds and would like to sit in your lap because he is a puppy, right? there aloof look is a bluff, they are sweet and funny. But you must keep after them because they are also stubborn. They are not dying to please you like a labrador, you must be in charge. This is our second, we will always have a Doberman Pinscher. The Doberman Pinscher Club has a great website. Please by from a good breeder, if you dont want to show the dog they have "pet quality" dogs that a normal person could never tell from show quality. Doberman rescue is also a good place to do a dog and yourself a favor. Go to a dog show if you want to see a group of people who make car fanatics seem normal...
If you have specific questions please feel free to email me. They also make great security dogs, they always watch...

For some reason, i read that as "sweetest and nicest dogs you'd ever want to eat LOL!"

And no, I don't own any dogs so I can't answer the original Q

Dale: We have zero security issues when we leave puppy Dino in the cars, although occasionally we find strange little bones on the carpet, like maybe fingers. He is very sweet, NEVER brings body parts to the bed. Also, he snores. He loves it when people "make his day" Every morning when the sun comes up in Yuma, he is ready for a new day and wakes us up to GET GOING-very nice, if you love dogs.

I had two growing up. One was the smartest dog I've ever been around, very humanistic in his behaviour too. The other was bigger, and therefore a little more intimidating to visitors, but all he wanted to do is lick them. Both were great dogs, and I'd seriously consider getting another in the future.
