    Hey everyone,

Today, I started to feel a weird feeling in my stomach. When I eat something mildly warm or hot, the "top" of my stomach starts to get this weird burning feeling. I have to "cool" it down by drinking something cool. Eating something cool doesn't bother me. Anyone know what's up with me?

2 days ago, I swallowed some REALLY HOT pieces of chicken, and it took my around 30 seconds before I could get water to cool my throat down. Is it an effect of this? Something like a burnt tounge, where it "burns" and then it wears off in a couple of days.

Any ideas on what's happening with me? Should I go see my doctor?

What were you eating and drinking with the chicken?

For the longest time, my esophagus would shrink when I ate even 2 potato chips. No fun to have throat constrict, lemme tell ya.

Retracing my steps, I found 2 things:

This was after I'd had hash browns in the AM, and, also had consumed Coca-Cola during the course of the day, which has caffeine.

I also had ringing in the ears - tinnitus.

Eliminating suspects - I stopped: potato and caffeine.

    Tinnitus stopped.

Indulged in some potatoes, no problem. Have consumed more and more spuds... no problems with esophagus since.

In the final analysis, it was the caffeine causing both problems.

Could be anything, or nothing at all. Doc will probably do a work up on you and see if it gets any better with time. If it gets dosen't get any better or gets progressivly worse they'll probably want to do an upper GI exam. This is a minor medical procedure that is done under a mild sedation where they pass a camera into your eshophagus to look at it and the interior of your stomach....it's not a really big deal.

I had the same problem and it caused me to almost choke to death once. Now I stay away from caffiene...in fact (sorry to go completely off topic) I think caffiene is one of the most dangerous , yet unrecognized, substances.

Yup! Though I do miss the taste of a proper Coca-Cola, I couldn't agree more.

Hey, did you ever get any residuals from the Tom and Jerry cartoons we spent so many years doing?

    I never got a dime.

This is classic Gastroesophageal Reflux (GERD). Stop eating spicy foods, avoid eating for 3-4 hours before sleeping, start taking Prilosec and if symptoms don't improve, see your MD or an ENT or GI specialist.

GERD is only one possible diagnosis. Could be a lot of things, won't know till you get worked up by a doc.

When you say "really hot" do you mean a very hot temperature or very spicy hot?
If it was a burning hot temperature, then yes, you could have burnt the bottom of your throat or top of your stomach.

Like when you burn the top of your mouth, it should heal within a week I would think.

I meant temperature, not spicy hot. I'm a spicy food kind-of person, I've always been, but this time it was temperature. I think I just burnt something, and it shoould heal.

Well, then there's Soul Food hot.

Like one time, I went down Crenshaw not too far below Adams to get some BBQ Bird from this one 'cue joint that used to be a Taco Bell -

Kindly old lady leans out and nonchalantly says in her kindly old lady voice, "You want hot?"

    'You bet!'

10 minutes later, my lips were purple.

The chicken wasn't hot in temperature, it wasn't spicy in flavor, it was just hotter than hell.

I've been dealing with this, or something like this since I was a kid. They discovered I have a hiatal hernia when I was about 13. This allows stomach acid to come into my esophagus. I had problems for years and then it got to be constant. Now I take protonix every night and have no problems as long as I take it.
