In the 70's, 80's, and 90's, I knew people who drove Ferraris. That was their car. They weren't collectors, it was the car they chose to buy and drive. I remember someone I knew in the early 90's drove a TR around San Francisco. Fine.

But today, at least from following BaT, it's like they are all second or third cars at best. I can't believe how many low mileage modern Ferraris pop up. It used to be a find to locate a time capsule. I bought my '89 328 in the early 90's with 900 miles, then happily proceeded to drive it. I was happy someone put it away for me until I was in a position to buy one. Today it is rare to find a late model (think current offeriing) Ferrari with more than 5,000 miles.

There have always been collectors, but they used to dirve them too.

Are Ferraris now strictly bought as some sort of drivable investment?

Anyone here drive a Ferrari as their only ride?

Yes, exotic cars have been popularized as investments especially in the past 3 years during the pandemic asset bubble/0 interest rate environment

the FF and probably the purosangue are excellent dailies, especially if they're shieldless

I daily my 458. It is not my only car but the only time it doesn’t get driven is when it is in the shop which is rare. I track it too.

In the two years I've owned my 328, I've driven it about 2-3 times a month (in the warm months) for a total of about 5k miles. It always feels like a special event when I take it out, which I plan sometimes days in advance. "Today's Ferrari day!" I think, as I drag my butt out of bed that morning. And it's all I can think about the whole day, before and after the drive. So if I drove it daily or even 3-4 times a week, I'm afraid some of that might wear off. It is tempting, though.

My Cali T gets more miles per year from me than any of my other cars. 20,000 miles in about 7 years. Takes about the same time to do local errands as my 1930 Ford Model A but it is better on the freeways in Southern California so the Cali T gets the longer trip miles.

I keep my Ferraris in New Zealand as it’s a great place to drive. That’s what I drive when I’m there - great roads, scenery and little to no traffic once you’re out of the three main cities.

Great topic. With cars like the California/Portofino, FF and Purosangue, Ferrari seems to be making cars that are intended to be used as cars. Production quantities are multiples of the ‘60s and ‘70s cars, so these are no longer rare, and with sat nav and driver aids they compete with other production cars and aren’t intended to sit under a cover for decades.

IMO it comes down to money. Someone with $10M in the bank might view a California or 488 as some of us view a BMW 3 series- nice car, but not especially important financially.

I have a Testarossa and a BMW. I put about 5000 miles per year on each. It's not cheap, but I can't think of a better way to spend the money.

I want to make that plunge but I have a 911 that I dearly love that I daily. Plus I keep buying cars so it’s a chore to get to all of them. I love the idea of one car that you drive all the time though.

THeres a difference between daily driving a Ferrari, but still having other vehicles in case you need them, and ONLY having a Ferrari to drive. Huge difference.

I dont know anyone who only has a Ferrari to drive.

I knew a gent who used to live here in the Atlanta area back in the mid 90's who daily drove his black Testa Rossa. Mark was his name, I think he was a software guy. very nice guy, gregarious and fun to be around. He told me he drove his 308 every day through the 80's until someone hit him and totaled the car - so he got the TR. We have another gent here in Atlanta who was a Pilot for USair, and he daily drove his Ferraris as well. He still drives his cars a lot... but he also has other cars to drive for errands etc.. I know of one other person who uses his FF almost every day... but he again has other cars for other uses... I dont personally know anyone who only has a Ferrari as their daily driver.

The only reason(s) I don't have a Ferrari as my single car are 1) Weather in Colorado in not conducive to only having a single high-performance car - not only the conditions themselves - which frankly can generally be navigated with a decent front or all-wheel-drive vehicle - but more of an issue are the morons that move here from warm climates - buy the biggest SUV they can find and have zero idea how to drive in snow/ice and 2) the fact I have built a small but special collection so enjoy driving/owning all the cars.

I could definitely be ok with only a single Ferrari (Lusso/Porto w winter tires for example) for my transportation if I wanted to consolidate/empty my small collection as well as risk being hit by some distracted imbecile in their new Escalade on a snowy/icy day but for me I prefer to have the Rubicon out in bad conditions and be able to enjoy the other cars as equally as possible when the weather is safe/decent.

    Cheers :)

At the recent Ferrari Festival in Houston, there were several owners of new cars, that pledged to "drive the wheels off", which is encouraging.

For me only, I find I'm driving it less due to increased crime and our (five or six) "Follow Home murders"...:p

The owner of the downtown Cadilac dealer was shot to death next to his 458 Italia, by some random street punks that just wanted his watch and wallet.
The difference in modern times is, they have a gun, and they don;t want the victim to survive as a witness.

...but he was parking his Escalade, the 458 was just "in the garage" next to it, near downtown.

Ive had my 89 328 for 24 years, its always been a second vehicle, a driving machine you might say Its not a car that I want to drive to the store to buy a gallon of whatever. The car has 105,000 miles, which 85,000 where put on by me. When I get in to drive it, im in it for 3,4. or 5 hours, only stopping for gas if needed. Over the last 4 years or so, Ive cut down on my time behind the wheel, the drivers out where I live, are so bad, that Im kind of afraid to even drive it anymore . I know that sounds bad, but its kind of the way Ive been feeling. Ive got a garage full of bikes that I ride, Im running shifter Karts, and now I have a Q50 as a daily driver, instead of driving my GMC truck all the time. Im sure I will get the bug to get in the Ferrari once it warms up here in So Cal.

I used to drive my cars as dailies in the summer and fall months, park them in the winter and just drive a cheap 2k winter beater. As I got older..I really longed for a nice comfortable drive..with nice seats, and a/C that actually blows cold, a controllable heater..and no worries. Such a free feeling not having to worry about where you park. Empty of F-cars right now..but when I do get another..it will be just a toy.

over the last 17 years, i have done between 5000 and 10,000 miles/year in ferraris, with the variables being how busy i am and where i am living, and which cars happen to be there.

i dailied my 456mgt for 9 years, and it cost a bomb to keep o the road, but it was comfortable.
during that time i also drove all the others to varying degrees, but none of them were good dailies, so they would get driven to events, to and on rallies, on road trips, etc.

but when i lived in snowy places, the ferraris got shelved when the snow had fallen - tried the 456 in the snow - not so good. but these fallow period were never that long.

i cannot imagine having ANY car as my only car.
in houston i have 7 cars and almost never have them all useable at the same time - something is always in the shop.
and, you need different cars for different purposes, so despite driving a lot of miles in ferraris, no one of them could have carried me through the last 20 years.

An older gentlemen came.intonthe shop a couple weeks ago. I would put him around 60. Wanted to bring his 456GTa in for service. I showed him around the shop and we got talking. Turns out he has upwards of 75 cars. Various Ferraris, Corvettes, Maserati's and a bunch of others. I asked him how he managed to accumulate so many cars..says he just kept buying and its gotten to the point where the collection now basicly owns him. We are going start getting them ready to sell one by one. BTW.. he drives a Toyota Camrey..

Reminds me of that dude Bundy.

BTW that's something I have such a hard time relating to... maybe it's because I am too 'lower class' [and now nouveau?] but if I have a nice car, I'm going to drive the nice car, period. Not hide it away in a garage or barn. If you're going to be a Millionaire Next Door then just have the Camry or F150 and don't be coy...
