Add me to the list of people who prefer the F50 over the F40. Both looks and everything else. In fact, the F50 is my favorite Ferrari of all time; and my second favorite car (McLaren F1 being my favorite, ignoring $$$).
I believe the F40 was the last car Enzo had a hand in designing. It was the first production car to run over 200mph. He built the F40 to beat the 959 Porsche in Group B. No frills, no extras. The class was killed before they had a chance to go head to head. It raced at LeMans and won. I believe the engine in the F50 was based on an F1 car. Being a street car, that made the engine legal for the 333sp in IMSA. I don't know of any racing record set by the F50. Due to its F1 roots the F50 transmits extreme harshness to the passenger compartment (so I've read) The F40 can be as docile as a 328 or as wild as a roller coaster. The F50 has far more technology and is far more complex to maintain. Rick Oh yea, I vote for the F40!
HOW DO YOU KNOW THIS?? The F50 would look good in black with a big gold chicken on the hood. (think black 70's trans am t-top) (flame suit on)
I with the F50 crowd. The F50 GT1 is my all time favorite Ferrari. Next would be the F40. Then it's a tie between the Enzo and the 288.
I'd take the F50 due to it's modern sleakness and it's plenty fast anyway. It's not like it's going to live most of it's life on the track and taking a chance for it's early grave.
the first time i saw either the f40 or f50 it was at the same place. but the f50 caught my eye first. that isn't to say the f40 isn't exotic looking, but the f50 just had that look to it. maybe it's those features that people find "ugly" in the car that make it stand out the way it did. i'd pick the f50 because it was the first real supercar i ever knew of. that combined with the exotic design of the car and the optional barchetta model really sets it apart.
great article, although there is something i dont understand, why do people find the f50 ugly? on the basis of looks i think it is the best ferrari ever made! to each his own i guess
There seem to be two crowds... those who prefer the angular designs and those who prefer the curvaceous designs. The angular crowd generally prefers the 3x8 and 355 to the 360, the Testarossa to the 250 Testa Rossa, and the F40 to the F50. The curvaceous crowd tends to prefer the opposite... or even the old 60's models over the angular 70's and 80's models. Like several here, I find the F50 to be the most beautiful of Ferraris... and love the 360's design, as it has the F50 lines, though far more conservatively done. To me the P3/P4, 250 Testa Rossa, and so on are far more beautiful than any of the 3x8's or 355. But many would not agree. In the end though, that diversity is a big part of why I love Ferrari...
