i though I was a pretty good techie (have 2 doctorates in IT/IS), but I looked at the engine in my 488 below and it was intimidating (scared the crap out of me). Do any other owners of modern Ferrari's ever energy change their own oil, much less air/oil filters? Ps!! yes I know I have 7 years service included, just don't want to feel so incompetent....

How much do you guys do yourselves????

A member here wrote up a nice DIY thread on 458 oil changes. It's also very detailed in the WSM. It's jut an oil change - no big deal ;) :D

I know some people have removed oil from their engines with a siphoning device, however seeing how many drain the oil from a hole underneath the engine, I would think the hardest part is to jack the car up sufficiently.

Now on the other hand, I don't know much about what or how to replace an oil filter with :\

Hi Jaapio, where did you see the instructions? I just became aware of the thread above from Dave Rocks. Do you know if there is any videos out there?

I got the instructions from the workshop manual, if you want I can stick it in one of these dropbox things so you can download it, if the link mentioned above doesn't work.

It is not difficult to do, I could not find the clutch oil, so I bought that from my dealer.

I detail my 488 Spider (as well as my prior 458s) on my own, but why not leave the oil changes to the dealer as part of annual service? The 458 and 488 engines are really tight and do not burn oil, so they do not need frequent changes.

Of course, how else can you bond with your car? Read Pirsig's "Zen and the art of motorcycle maintenance".

I don't get free oil changes on my 2011 458, but I do on my Z06 and I still do my own. Cheaper than a therapist.

I do the other maintenance as well; am getting ready to do the coolant change. Like others said, all the info is here in F-Chat.

That having been said, I have a twin-post lift. If I didn't, I doubt I'd crawl under there.

As soon as my free service on the car comes to an end, I plan on doing the oil and everything on my car. I'm also probably going to put some sort of access holes in the under tray to speed things up.

I don't remember seeing any instructions on making holes in the underside covers, I did not make any of those.

I'm not a fan of altering factory parts. Also, are we sure oil won't splash and then end up on the top of the pan? While it might be a PITA, just remove the pan, do the job proper and reinstall ;)

I don't disagree. I recall the thread. I'm not judging anyone for what they do - I'm just saying it's not something I would do - I'm a bit of a purist :)
