Favour to ask please if anyone could possibly help out. My car has started making a strange metal rattling sound at about 3500 rpm. It comes from the intake and happens shortly after the woosh sound as the pressure changes. I've tried to diagnose what is causing it by checking pretty much everything from the grill on the intake, the resonator, the air filter housing and even by oiling the throttle bodies. The only other thing I can think it could be is the filters as I use K&N branded ones. I do prefer these over the originals as I clean and reoil them regularly plus when first fitted they sounded better imo. I've since chucked the oem ones but I'd really like to fit some again now just to check if the rattling sound goes away to rule out the filters at least.

Does anyone have an old set of paper ones they could possibly send me please? Doesn't matter how dirty they are as they'll only be used for 20 mins to test and of course I can pay for postage as well as send them back to you if you like the same day as they are received.

While I would normally just buy some its seems a bit pointless as if it doesn't cure my problem the k&n's will go back in and I'll have a set if filters I'll never use again.

Be grateful if anyone could help out. Many thanks either way.

Just MHO but K&N filters suck. They are free flow because they allow a ton of crap into your intakes. I would stick to OEM or other quality paper filters, but maybe that's just me after having to clean fine sand out of my 911's intakes...

Butterfly rattle? Have you had the plenum off to inspect the inlet and balance butterflies?

With the car idling, reach under the side if the plenum to feel the linkage. You can open the butterflies to see if the noise changes.

There are a total of 9 butterflies in there and they can work loose or more often the noise is slop/backlash in the mechanism.

Agree on the filters. Oil soaked filters upstream of the MAF's never seems a good idea to me.

If you just need to run the car for a few seconds to see if you hear the rattle, could you not just take the filters out and run it long enough for your diagnosis?

Great idea! Will do this tonight and take her for a short run! So simple and can't believe I've not thought of it!

Yes this is what I fear it may be but wanted to rule out the filters before looking into removing the plenum. My car does change noise when the level is pulled as it has done since I first bought it, but nothing much different from other 360's. The noise occurs at 3500rpm though so I can't pull the level when doing this when driving. When stopped either it doesn't happen or the exhaust is too loud to hear it.

With regards to the butterflies, don't I have to remove the entire intake manifold to fix if they are the culprit? Or can it just be done by removing the plenum? What is required to quieten them down? I've heard is a complicated job with new bushings required (ferrari tech who also said my car is fine and not worth doing) and also someone mention loctite athough they didn't explain further (fchat thread). Any expertise here gladly appreciated!!

If the butterflies are loose on the bars you can nip them up. It is is play in the mechanism I would personally leave it as it will do no harm and you will never totally eliminate it.

I cannot remember if you can rebuild in situ but the risk of dropping something in the inlet is too high IMO.

Mine do flutter about 3-4k as they come off the stops. Maybe your now hearing something that has always been there?
