Well, I tried to buy a Testarossa from them and it turned out to be a disaster. See the thread "PPI in St. Louis Mo" - it is on the second page of this section.

The basic problem was that they would not allow me to get a PPI done on it until/unless I prepaid a deposit on it. I said nothing doing because I was afraid that if something went wrong I would not be able to get my money back. There was also the problem that the car did not have any books or records available.

I got the definate impression that something was just not right about this outfit -

but, later I found a local car here in Dallas (single mirror 86 Testarossa) so all is OK now.

BTW - nice pic of the 993. I have a 1996 Targa as my daily driver; best 911 I have ever owned out of about ten since 1969.

I don't have any personal experience with them, but I haven't heard many positive comments about them. What James experienced seems like the standard for most who do try and work with them. I'd stay away.

Thanks James...this is very helpful information.

The 993 is the best Porsche I have ever owned and I've had quite a few. I will always have a 993 in my stable and it will remain one of the best machines that I have ever acquired.

Affirmative on the 993. I have driven the 996/997, but I just have not gotten into the water cooled designs yet (maybe ever). Mine has 95,000 miles now, but I had RUF Autocenter rebuild the engine last year, so it is probably my daily driver until I retire.

PS - my second choice against the Testarossa was a 1987 RUF Slant-Nose Turbo Cabriolet in red. This was the actual car that was on the cover of R & T for a comparison test with a Factory Five Cobra replica. I guess I just had to have a 12 cylinder Ferrari this time around, though, because I felt that this might be my only chance to own one - if the market should heat up it would put a Ferrari 12 back out of my reach forever.

Anyway, Hans at RUF later told me that the guy who ended up with the RUF Turbo promptly blew it up.

PS, I bumped my old Shmitt motors thread so you could find it.

RUF is the dream car my friend. Would love to pick up a 993 Turbo R with all the goodies but the price to do the conversion is prohibitive unless you pick up a clean existing example (you'll still have to pay dearly).

Alois makes a hell of a machine and I spent a lot of time with a year ago at Pebble Beach when they launched the new RK Coupe.

The classic slant nose cars are iconic...but in terms of driving dynamics and overall driveability, I'd go 993.

I had a fully modified 930 and it was a monster...but a little insane at the limit.

I bought my 348 from them several years ago sight unseen. I had a complete service preformed before delivery, no problems car was as described, but given what others have said about them I guess I was just lucky.

Yikes alive - if it really is the same turbo car, then they are asking more than twice what RUF Autocenter offered to me. If it NOT the same one, then it may not even be an original RUF Vin number, which theirs really was. It had the RUF-special 5 speed box in place of the Porsche 4speed, too.

Back on the 308 Ferrari and the Schmitt dealer of this thread, I am standing by to see what happens.

They almost NEVER have books, tools, or records for that matter since most of their cars are bought at auction.

My advice in looking for a 308 is do not buy a cheap one unless you can do alot of the work yourself. They can turn out to be just as expensive as other Ferraris, just do your homework on the car and the dealer prior to purchase. You want your experience to be a good one so just cover all your basis. Best of Luck

I will ask Hans or Wayne at RUF if this is the same one, or even a real one. I thought there was only the one red/black cab with RUF vin. Do you happen to have a link?

Wonder how the Ferrari deal is progressing? I have kind of a morbid interest after being down that road myself.

UPDATE: I walked away from considering that dealership due to the great feedback that I have gotten from all of you.

Thanks again for your input and extremely valuable feedback on this less than desirable dealer.

ebay is what made him successful. as told to me by a fellow f-chatter, the guy buys cars sight unseen at auction, thus leading to usually poorer car quality. however, this says nothing of his employees. i've visited them a number of times, but it would take a hell of a lot to get me to buy from them, which i have no plans on doing so, ever.

Agree with Scott. He's not as bad as his father (Charles Schmitt) but that isn't saying much!

He dosen't buy sight unseen that often. He has a guy looking at the cars for him that alot of people don't even relize. He's a a guy always on his cell phone with Danny. Only downfall is that he never looks under these cars.
