I know the 550 has a much higher top end due to limiter on CL but how does the other performance compare? The CL has higher HP and Torque but much higher weight also.

First of all the speed governor can be bypassed.

The CL has noticeably more torque. Without the traction control on, you can go sideways at will...AT ANY APEED! I blew away a Duc 996 on the freeway, starting with an 80MPH straight line drift! When I let the guy catch me, a couple of miles later, the look of astonishment on his face was priceless! It is more comfortable, driveable, the stereo is better and it can be considered rare....125 is easily attainable on a typical freeway onramp! I would be thrilled to take it on a long drive.

That said, it's still not a Ferrari! It has neither the sound, the feel nor will it get the attention of a Maranello (if that's what you want). It's alot heavier and feels it. Neither are pocket rockets but a Maranello is better for canyons.

I haven't driven a Maranello, but I have driven the MB. It felt WAY to heavy to me, sloppy almost. But the biggest drawback is the damn autobox. Get the F-car.

My first reaction on reading the thread title was, what a stupid question. I can't believe anyone in the market for either would not know the fundemantal differences already.
There have been numerous comparisons betwwen the 612 and the CL65, which the 612 has won convincingly.
If you are after a VERY fast luxo barge, the CL is for you. There is nothing wrong with these, I usually have something similar as my daily driver. The CL has radar cruise control, electronic damping, adjustable air suspension, stability control that cannot be switched off, awesome stereo with NAV, DVD, TV etc. The seats can be optioned to heat, cool, vibrate and even massage (yes really). If you are after technolgy and gadgets this is for you.
If you like to drive hard and enjoy a car that has a chassis that communicates what is going on, don't care for cruise control abd electro-trickery then the 550 is for you. Point to point on freeways and city traffic, the CL is far and away the better car IMO. If however, you are the sort who prefers taking the "scenic" route, the 550 is for you.

Thanks, you silver tongued devil. I ask for a reason. My partner has a CL65 and it is awesomely fast in straight line. I have screwed around with him a little on straight line bursts and he is very fast but I can feel how heavy and cumbersome his car is and was just wondering if anyone knew how they compare if tracked or on the street when curves are involved. I would hope the 550 would take it but I am very impressed with how AMG turned this houseboat into a cigarette boat. I was hoping for some input that was a little more objective (lateral g's, slalom times, etc.). Also, it leads me to wonder, what if I bi-turboed my 550? Just imagine.

No problems, politics was never my calling :D
I'll fish out the info you're after when I get home since you asked so nicely.
The TT on the 550 would be awesome. Thought about it fleetingly myself once, but aside from costs, my biggest concern would be the issue of underhood temps, which is already an issue, even without two hairdryers adding to the problem.

Heck, I do not know anything but my sweet 550 is nice. The MB is German. The Germans are great engineers with no souls. Italy has soul. My 550 is Italian. My name is German but I like soul.

Of course, my 550 is a V-12. That makes it smooth not like any V-8.

    12 cylinders or walk.
