I'm experiencing the Throttle butterfly ticking/rattle noise on my 2000 360 coupe with 7K miles. This is the one where when you put your finger under the intake manifold and touch the linkage the noise stops. If you didn't know it you would swear it was valve train noise but it seems to be caused by the manifold Throttle butterfly valves or the shaft that they are all mounted on.

I have tried searching for a full week but even though it has been talked about quite a few times no one seems to describe what was done to fix it. The noise is just plain annoying and as I'm picky anyway it's getting louder psychologically (or physically maybe). I have no problems taking the intake apart but want to know what parts to order or fabricate before getting the thing in pieces. I did see someone indicate that it was a $6K repair at the dealer but don't know if this is true.

Any help would be much appreciated.

    Thanks

PM sent, thanks for the offer.

Not much happening here so I may move this to the Tech repair area to see if some of the guru's know anything.

For that price a louder exhaust and louder stereo are better fixes.

my friend's car has this noise and like you say, you'd swear it was a valve train noise coming from within the motor. But, you can stop it by reaching under there and touching your finger to the linkage or whatever it is under there. I think it controls the little butterfly valves on each intake runner, but I have never taken the cover off to look.

On my car, I don't have the noise. It seems like some cars have it, others don't. I'll attach a couple of pictures from a recent thread which might be of some help to you. I suspect it's just the linkage or the butterfly valves bouncing around in the velocity stacks or something. Personally, I wouldn't worry all that much about it.

    Thanks Ray,

DeLuca got back to me today and it loos like a screw had come loose from the central butterfly on his. Turns out the screw was just resting there. It could be one of the small butterfly valves on mine and I'm tempted to pull the covers off and look just in case something comes adrift.

I already have a tubi and the sound still annoys the hell out of me so I'd feel much better if it was fixed.
