Can the VIN be used to trace the linage of the vehicle? I am posting some pictures of my car as I have asked so many questions about it and will in the future. This is my first Ferrari and it needs some TLC. It has 21,000 miles on it but I still feel there are areas that need improvement and maintenance. It is a 1983 308 GTSi QV Euro spec car. In the engine compartment contains a tag stating that the vehicle was destin for the French market. These pictures were taken prior to purchase.

Any help is appreciated. I can post additional pictures regarding specific issues.

Sort of unusual to see a QV with TRX wheels.

Looks nice enough, to me....(I drive old beaters ;) )

NNO, a fellow chatter works 'inside'.....he can tell you some things, sometimes..

I don't think CARFAX will work on Euro VINs, and doesn't tell all, anyway.

    Congrats and good luck!

Many QVs came with TRX wheels..... Most did come with 16" though.... Really nice car. What you can do is go to the factory and get a heritage certificate.... Also, I guess you could run a CarFax and see how much history you can deduce from that....

    Tim,

You can call Dick Merritt with the car's VIN at the DOT in Washington, D.C. (202 366 5300). He should be able to get you the DOT/EPA paperwork regarding the 308's importation and can advise you of any issues regarding the car's federalization.

In addition, you can forward the VIN to the folks at Ferrari Market Letter and they may be able to compile a history of the car's ownership while here in the states.

The TRX's are the metric rims that came as OEM wheels on the 308. IIRC, the 16" cromodora's were optional in 1983 and standard on most US bound cars for 1984 and 1985. not sure about the Euro spec cars but I'm guessing they didn't get the 16's as OEM. someone else may know more about that. One disadvantage of the TRX is that they were designed to be fitted with metric tires, which are now very hard to find (Coker is your best bet) and way more costly. The other is that they are a little smaller than the 16" wheels (TRX's are close to 15") so handling isn't as good. Most people seem to upgrade their TRX's to either the 16" cromo's or go for 17/18" aftermarkets where tire choices are plentiful
