This is a strange guy, check out his listing, he is so firm about people coming out to check out the car before bidding and telling everyone that if you bid and win, you own it, so ask all questions ahead of time, he has been vague about his answers and know i have told him to please send a phone number so i can discuss it and i haven't heard back.....i also wrote him and told him i would be in his area later this week and i would like to inspect the car and have not heard from him.....seems strange....plus the car has vermont plates and he claims the car has never been driven in vermont, he is in connecticut, that seems strange.....any thoughts out there....

Sorry - I don't know the car but I've got an '86 3.2 cab and this one seems worth looking at if you're in his area. I've sold a car on E-Bay and can sort of understand why he's being so cautious (although he seems a little overboard.) I got so many scam offers and weird questions when I sold my car on E-Bay - you do have to be careful as a seller. As a buyer or a seller though, always go with your gut. "If it walks like a duck..." If this guy won't give you straight answers, return your calls, or arrange to have you view the car - something is wrong with it. Walk away - quickly.

Just looking the listing over I noted that the exhaust tips looked a little extra rusty, it's an early '86 with metric wheels that require TRX tires, and if the top doesn't leak than he's got the only 3.2 cab in existence that doesn't. In fact, note that the "B-pillars" (between the front and rear windows) both are missing some rubber trim on the lower portions. This is a pretty common area to break on a 3.2 cab, and it will let water in like a sieve. (Kinda makes one suspicious of his other claims, huh?)

It looks like there's some damage to the driver's seat above the side hinge, there is some sort of alarm or radar red light installed in the switch blank below the fog lamp switch, and the radio antenna isn't fully retracted. There's been some sort of black trim/rub strip installed on the belt line of both sides of the car, and both lower rocker panels show either rust, damage, or maybe just dirt.

While I'm being picky, I'd ask why the coolant light is still coming on if a new radiator was installed (if you had an engine cooling problem, what was it, and why didn't you fix it completely?) I'd also ask if there is a top "boot" cover, tonneau cover, tool roll (the jack roll is already pictured), and what sort of manuals are in that leather case. Obviously I'd ask the regular (and most important) maintenance questions, find out where it was done, get a PPI, etc.

And then I'd realize that I'm probably being a picky a$$h@le about the little things, and go see the car if the guy starts communicating and doesn't make the hair on the back of your neck stand up. ("I work full time" so I'll try to answer e-mails - please!) If the regular major things are ok and you can get a really good deal on it - this might turn out to be a good car with some work on the part of the buyer. Maybe this could be a Ferrari rescue, or maybe it's not worth it. Good luck and have fun finding out!

thanks for the detailed response....what is also strange is that he was answering questions in the beginning....my emails to him have been nothing but gracious and courteous but have not heard back...he says he has owned the car for a year and that he got it from a dear friend....

still doesn't make sense that the car is titled and registered in vermont but it has never been driven in vermont? the carfax shows a history of being in vermont.....

plus, he claims the car has NEVER seen rain or snow, how would he know, the car was titled and registered in NJ in the 90's, so he has no personal knowlegde of its history beyond his friend....

all seems to strange for me.....i need to buy from someone who has had a longer history with the car than a year and would welcome me to his garage to take a look.....

i could not have been nicer, told him i was a former mondial cab owner and excited to possibly own another one --- you would think that would get him motivated to return my emails and i have asked him for a phone number three times and even offered mine if he is worried about privacy....

he claims he would welcome any visitors to look at the car - it all sounds fishy.....

There's almost definitely a story behind this one - and this guy probably knows it since he's putting you off. Sometimes when a deal is too good to be true... Even if you could get it for under $20k, you could easily blow another $10-15k if there are some major service needs. Add that to all the little cosmetic stuff you'll do yourself, and it would be easier and cheaper to buy one in excellent shape from a stand-up guy with the appropriate records. And why isn't there a pic of the engine?

Sounds like a problem. Your gut feeling is right. If he doesn't have the time or courtesy to answer questions BEFORE he get any money in hand, what happens when you actually have a deal with him?

His 2 feedback doesn't impress me and he is using keyword spamming in his title (328,348 etc) which is against ebay policy.
His auction can be shut down if someone turns him in.
