My kid currently has a dumb-phone with unlimited data. He wants a Samsung Galaxy S II, but will have to buy it outright since he's not yet eligible for an upgrade. If he buys the phone and plugs in his sim card, I expect the new phone will work, but wonder if the carrier will be able to figure out I've moved to a smart phone and force me to a new data plan. Anyone know?

I've moved several AT&T sims with no problem. Just make sure it's a full data plan. If he's on a "dumb" phone, it just may be a texting plan. If it's a true data plan, you shouldn't have a problem.

It depends on the phone. Each of them communicate with the towers differently. You will still have to contact them to set up data options for the phone, the iPhone is its own breed when it comes to data, if you have android it should just be any data plan
