My question is around the carfax service that is on the web. I am looking for a car for my wife and in the past I just looked them over, did a PPI and then bought the car she preferred and hoped for the best. Does this carfax service really work, does it really uncover hidden details on the car. Has anyone used this service and did they uncover any hidden surprises. Just curious before I spend my money on this web site. Any comments would be appreciated.

    Regards,
    JP

It depends on what you mean by hidden details. If the car was totalled and has a salvage title CarFax will help, but it won't tell you about every fender bender it's been in. CarFax is owned by Polk, and is compiled from public records. If it's not in a government database it won't appear in a CarFax report.

Perhaps another question is, how effective and accurate is CarFax in Canada?
We don't do DOT & EPA up here. Our Provincial governments do the registering.

It appears to be accurate and complete.....I purchased a BMW in Vancouver, BC and imported it into Washington State. I ran a carfax, and it listed all the registration and inspections done in BC. I also ran a check with the local ICBC (gov't run insurance) as they run a claims database that is open to the public (small fee for a check) and make sure the car was not in a serious accident.

I decided to call the quebec license bureau and for free you can find out if the car has had any insurance claims, and the response was no, however they can not tell you more than that. Interesting as the carfax web site says there are 7 statements and that for $25 I can find out what these 7 statements are on the car's VIN. I guess I am just going to have to put the 25 bucks down to satisfy my curiosity.
