Does everyone here own a LaFerrari, Enzo or a F40? :)

    That would be great.

YES. Many members own one or all at the same time.

Do you mind if I ask why those vins, and all the info that can be gotten with them, is any of your business?

    I dont think so.
In fact, if you look at all the generous owners who are taking time to share pictures and videos, they all have a deep passion for cars and Ferrari, and most of the time you'll find other supercars in their garage, like an Enzo of an F40.

Go check the LaFerrari picture thread, few owners already in there, and few more to come soon.

In many countries chassis numbers are in the public domain, assists purchase due diligence, etc.

Nah, you'll be fine. Just check to make sure there's an engine in the back. ;)

It's none of my business! But it's also not as private an inquiry as, say, asking someone for their social security number. My interest lies only in documenting the Ferraris, and each car's individual history. Exterior and interior color, options, location, mileage at points of exchange, owner (if possible), etc. People often ask me why I want to know Ferrari VINs and/or why I document Ferrari VINs - but no owner of any pre-1980 Ferrari has ever questioned me when I asked for the serial number of their car. Ferrari serial number recording is a well-documented interest, and there are many others like me (many who are better than me!); I'm just the most vocal about this peculiar (a)vocation.

I hope this explanation is suitable enough that whenever you see a Ferrari, you photograph its VIN. :)

Good job articulating that POV, but I disagree with the idea that because governments is involved in auto registration, all that info ought to be publicly available. So I won't be photographing VINs, but I do appreciate you taking the time to explain your perspective.

I don't believe it should be publicly available - and in some cases it's not, though it'd make my job a lot easier twas it all posted somewhere online for me to copy and paste. I also don't believe the government should be involved, but perhaps that's another story for another day. In any case, I appreciate you taking the time to consider my point of view; most people either immediately understand my goal and get on board, or disagree and dismiss both me and my mission as creepy and/or weird. So thank you.

Aside from the info (confidential or not) that can be obtained with a VIN, the number itself is primarily an identification means, and as such it's obviously very useful for a variety of purposes. Just as every manufactured piece of machinery in the world has a serial number for identification.

Then the fact that it should be visible just from outside the car as per most countries regulations helps de-mistify this obscureness about VIN-knowing or VIN-secrecy.

I understand that the vin itself empowers all kinds of things. What I don't like is the idea that people can use data like this for their own purposes without the explicit consent of those involved. That governments sanction this sort of thing is besides the point.

I didn't mean to derail the thread. I just really don't like the ease with which people claim a right to this sort of info, often hiding behind inconsiderate regulation.
