Does that shield on the back of the alternator really need to be there?

    My experience with 308s is different. A major alternator failure cause is the brushes cutting deep grooves into the slip rings due to oil being sucked into the alternator. Any oil drops falling down into the area under the front header get vacuumed into the alternator.
