I just bought a 1981 Mondial and customs are concerned about the last five digits of the Chassis number not being in line with the rest of the numbers. Is this normal?

Yes it looks original - the first series of numbers were machine-pressed (essentially the same for many car, ex all RHD qv have the same) before the last 5 chassis digits (the actual chassis number individual to each car) were hand-stamped upon assembly of each car. Same on on mine:

Does your car have the same number on the steering column shroud?

Looks absolutely correct. As stated the last digits are added by hand later.

I have a theory here Guido: The right-most star was stamped with the left and the initial number sequence. The star next to the 1 was stamped with the actual chassis number to prevent more numbers from being added, much like it is done on passports behind the name etc. As for the welds, I'll check on my car and take a pic.

This is how it looks in my QV/82....
And it seems to me that plate with the number on it, is a bit lower than the right side chassis.

Urs, would a Ferrari mechanic that works all day long putting numbers on chassis, work so sloppy ? He or they have a certain pattern to follow. I hope the Mister Asfour can give us some more information where that car came from and if there is a tag on the steering wheel. Its like some one put an other metal over the original with numbers. It can be that the original number is still on that chassis.

I slight level of sloppiness might not have been unknown when they built our cars... but I see your point. The double star is concerning to me, as is the letter spacing. The welds however look similar to my car's.

Here for the OP how it looked on my car before painting:
