Hi everyone I decided to ask the question in this section of the forum as well in the Mondial section given the similarity in transmissions. I decided on the weekend to drop my transmission pan to change the fluid and adjust the gear selector on my Mondial as my shifts were a little baulky at times especially from first to second gear. All was going to plan however when I got to the turn buckle to commence my adjustment and I removed the dust boot I noticed the shaft is off centre and almost rubbing against the exit hole. Is everyone else's shaft centred as it exits the cabin or off-centred like mine? Any ideas would be appreciated as I have come to a stop until I am confident it is correct (which I doubt)! You are lucky there is a round hole. You want it to be perfectly centered too? That is too much to ask for on an Italian car put together on a Friday.
Ned, you can turn that middle part of this assembly more to the back, so it risk less touching that round opening wall. What are those wires doing there so close to the shaft ? (blue cirkel).... Image Unavailable, Please Login
You cannot turn that middle section in that way. It is a turnbuckle, regular thread one end and reverse thread the other end. Turning that middle section shortens or lengthen the shaft which would interfere with the shifting.
Well engine mounts in 308’s are known to go rotten with age. If Mondi’s are the same then probably worth a look
Thanks for all the replies, barry308QV I also thought the engine mounts may be sagged on the side in which the shaft is leaning towards I will loosen the engine mounts and jack up the left side of the engine just a little to see if this centres the shaft. Funny thing is the car drove great beforehand, no vibrations and very smooth just second gear was difficult at times. Thanks again for the responses it’s a great help! Oh and the wires are from an aftermarket cigarette light that the previous owner installed, it is on the to do list to remove!!
Of course you can turn this long bolt with lock nuts backwards. Put in 2nd gear. Loosen the bolt of the silent block (engine side) and remove. Put in 3rd gear so that the control rod on the engine side comes loose. Loosen the counter nuts completely, turn the long bolt anti-clockwise and the loose control rod also anti-clockwise with the same number of revolutions. Reconnect the silent block with the shaft.
theunissenguido, thanks for explaining that to me. I have booked out my weekend to work on the car (the wife isnt too happy)! I will give it a try and report back, really appreciate the help!
