So long story short my puppy died today at 6 months old. It was sudden and alot of blood was lost from her mouth, but obviously I felt no need to spend a ton of money on an autopsy, but if it's possible I'd like to hear some opinions because my vet left me with none.

Bella, was part of a litter of dachshunds from a reputable breeder from who I own 2 others, she never grew like her brothers and sisters. She was only 2.8 lbs today at her death, but extremely tiny. I had owned her for 3 months, the vet said she was fine in previous checkups, and to be honest she was so full of energy everyday. This morning, I wake up play with her for a few hours and at noon I take her to petco to cut her nails, as Im walking in to petco, she starts spitting up blood, I immediately rush her to the vet 2 miles away, the vet says her heart and breathing are stable once the oxygen mask is on, then 10 minutes later she is gone. The doctor said her lungs were full of blood possibly but I just want some kind of closure just for myself you know? Any explanation would great, I knew all along as a midget she may not have been developed it was just so sudden, and she bled all over me in the car from her mouth. I'm just shocked and just blown away right now

I read this to my significant other, she's been studying vet for quite awhile (but recently went into medical school instead).

She says that if it's any disease, it could be an acute form of (cardiac) parvovirus, in which the lungs become infected and inflamed, the symptoms and what follows usually happens pretty quickly. She says that this is probably not it though, as your vet should have been able to recognize this relatively easily (Although cardiac-parvo is rare, and the parvovirus usually affects digestion).

She suggests that your dog may have simply gotten into something it shouldn't have, and had a horrible reaction to it.

I hope this helps in some way. Pets, dogs especially, don't ask for anything but food- and they're happy to be your absolute best friend for their entire lifetime.

    God bless,
    Colin

So sorry for your loss :( do you have a garden with slugs and snails in them? if so this sounds like a case of lung worm to me.

And also a fox's faeces will transmit it.

The lung worm that we see in this country infects mostly domestic dogs and foxes. Worm larvae are excreted in the faeces of these animals and mature inside what we call an 'intermediate host'. These intermediate hosts are mainly slugs and snails. Dogs become infected with lungworm by eating slugs and snails that contain these lung worm larvae. And the cycle continues as the dog passes infected faeces.

Any dog can become infected with lung worm, but young dogs are most commonly affected. The symptoms are varied which can make diagnosis tricky, the main symptom being a sudden excessive bleed from the mouth,Symptoms associated with lung disease are not always present.

I do have a garden and she would always pick up leaves but what you're saying is plausible. What I know is she went from jumping and playing like crazy to dead in 15 minutes and lost unreal amounts of blood all over me in the car. I was so upset I didnt really talk to the vet after it all. You sound like someone in the know do you think it may have had something to do with her being underdeveloped and a midget? I mean all re doctor said was lots of blood in her lungs but I never saw her have trouble breathing she was just so active I find it hard to believe this was an existing condition. The suddeness of it all is what leaves me with so many questions

My Daughter is a trainee vet and i showed her this thread.

There are two main signs to be aware of, although an infected dog may appear totally healthy, excessive bleeding from the mouth and weight loss, Dogs under the age of two appear to be more susceptible than older dogs, though dogs of all ages and breeds can be affected.

I'm sorry for your loss... I'm not a vet, but here is a possible explanation...

The lungs are where oxygen/CO2 are exchanged from the air to the blood and vice-versa. This exchange requires an incredibly vascularized organ, where there is very little membrane separating the blood vessels from the air. Because of this, any tears or ruptures in that membrane can result is and incredible amount of bleeding. The resultant coughing/wheezing that may occur because of that tear can easily make the problem worse, especially if there is a systemic issue with the lungs.

Being a runt, it is certainly plausible that the mucus membrane that protects the blood vessels in the lungs had not fully developed. If there was some form of infection, as has been suggested, that could easily have exacerbated the problem further. Once a single tear formed and she started to bleed into her lungs, it could possibly snowball very quickly and without warning.

Sorry to hear--did your vet give you any indication what they thought may have happened? I know Parvo is a big concern for puppies and can be fatal (my sister's puppy died from Parvo), but I don't know how it presents itself. Any chance of a congenital issue?

Wow..........so sorry to hear about your loss.

I wonder if perhaps the dog ate some wood, or glass chips, or something hard and sharp like that.

Honestly all the vet told me was that she wanted to do x-rays while the dog was on oxygen because there was blood in her lungs but literally 5 minutes after that she was gone. The vet said something about a collapsed lung but I was just so down I didn't really feel like questioning anything I just paid my tab for cremation and left. I am starting to believe she may have either had an infection or eaten something that pierced her internally that caused all the bleeding because a a dog that weighs less than 3 lbs should not have bled that much but hopefully she's in a better place now anyways.

So sorry to hear about your puppy. I hate to bring this up, but do you have any rat/mouse problems in the area? Many rat poisons use chemicals that are anticoagulents. If your puppy got a few pelltes of this or ate a mouse that had eaten the poison it could present like this. I am not a vet or a vettech so take this as just another possibility.

While there are many obscure causes of this I suggest you should just get another pup. Insure your home is safe best you can & find another pup to love. The cause of death may never be found.
Hook worms cause bleeding & death quickly. Roaches carry lots of things w/ a small pup being sensitive. My big boy cat suddenly started vomiting & WBC showed levels in the red indicating mass infection. Broad spectrum antibiotics for a week cured him despite no concrete diagnosis.
    Get another & give love.
