Someone asked me to post about dogs and the toxicity of chocolate...the topic is long but here are a few tips....and please do not ask me about buying a Ferrari, some of you will know why, thnx!

Chocolate contains two by products; caffeine and theobromine; of which can stay in the dog for up to 20 hours or more; the real questions are:

    How big is the dog?
How much do you think he ate?
How long ago did you note it missing?
What type of chocolate is it?

Generally speaking milk chocolate is less toxic than say dark or some coco powders, and there is white, bitter sweet, etc.

It is ALWAYS wise to seek medical attention ASAP,seek a vet immediately; there is the NAPC,National Animal Poison Control Center(800-548-2423) that can help you calculate how much is too much for your dog; signs of toxicity include elevated heart rate and respiration, vomiting, diarrhea, kidney failure can be involved. Treatment may include detoxification including inducing vomiting and IV fluids in a hospital, charcoal administration; some dogs may have muscle tremors/seizurea and may receive IV medication for this...hope this helps, dogdoc

Good info Doc! BTW, we take a road trip up to the mountains of north Georgia and NC twice per year. If you are interested in joining us for the drive keep an eye on the Florida calendar or forum around Late February / mid September to see when we are going. The first trip most guys brought Ferraris, but lately it has been other sports cars, so no F car needed!!!

Back in the day we had a dog ate an entire bag of halloween 100 grand bars. The only thing she puked up was a wad of plastic wrappers which had turned a pinkish white. She was a mixed breed, about 50 pounds. No ill effects.

That would make sense since there's really only a chocolate coating on each one, and they're milk chocolate not dark.
