I've always lusted after a 355 since its introduction. I thought with the 360 replacement and now onto the current 430, the desire to own a 355 would dissipate. Guess I was wrong, and have been casually browsing the used market of the 355. This is what caught my eye:

    http://www.motorcars-intl.com/veh_detail.aspx?stockno=M-4030&title=1999%20Ferrari%20355%20F1%20Berlinetta&stocknoid=445

Would love to know anything about this car in case ex owner was on F-Chat. Or if someone knows the previous owner and history of the car, please chime in.

I know the 355 isn't without its troubles, but are the cars of '99MY "better" than the earlier models?

Also, any feedback about the dealer would help as well. Experiences? Opinions?

One question, has anyones 355 left them stranded at the side of the road from engine/transmission trouble?

    Thanks!

Sorry couldn't help you on that particular car's history here.
It sure looks nice from those photos. It's already got the desirable fender shields and rear challenge grill too.
    Price seems pretty good also
and most of all it's a '99 F1! Of course I'm biased here.....

Is '99 better than any of previous years?? Maybe, maybe not.
Better is such a subjective word. Especially here on Fchat you'll going to get a whole lot of different opinion from owners of various years vowing for their car being the best year.

For me the choice was easy since I wanted F1 trans so that limited my search to '98 and '99 only. And I was lucky enough to find a late '99 production car so I wouldn't have to worry about the dreaded valve-guide issue. So what year is the better 355??? To me, it's '99 fore sure....but did I mention I'm biased??

    Good luck searching for yours!

Patrick, you recently purchased your car as well correct? How is the F1 system running? Most people I've talked to always had something bad to say about the F1 system on the 355. However I don't want a 6-speed manual for my next purchase. Just hoping the 355's system isn't as bad as they say.

Mind if I ask how much your car was purchased for? I'll take a PM if you wouldn't mind disclosing.

Also, I did some more thread reads and came across 285ferrari's post in another thread about this particular car. Seems like he has called the dealership on it before and found out it needs a major, not to mention a clutch job might be in order too. Sounds like an instant $10K+ headache even before the purchase.

Has your car had any maintence issues since your ownership?

    Thanks for your feedback.

Looking at that car made me understand again why I used to love the F355 so much. It is such a beautiful design and if it is not standing next to a 360 it doesn't even look dated. All I can say is WOW! :)

Never posted before but need advice. Have opportunity to buy my first Ferrari but don't know much about them. The one I may have a chance to buy Is '99 F1 F355 Spyder with less than 3000 miles on it. One owner who I am sure took meticulous care of it. What price range would be reasonable for this car? What things should I be extra careful to have check by someone knowledgeable on my behalf? I live in a rural area fairly far from a Ferrari service center--how reliable is the '99 F355? Is it a model that has been known to have a lot of problems or relatively free of them? Any advice here would be greatly appreciated. The car has never spent any length of time parked outdoors.

I'm with Patrick and also biased, '99 F1 is THE one to have! There are some F1 horror stories out there, but don't be scared by the pump cost. Some quote $12-16k from Ferrari, but many have fixed it for $1-2k (and they don't fail nearly as often as the early valve guides). There's also merits to an early Motronic 2.7 car which has a bit more power, IF you find one with the valve guides done. And need to point out the one downside to the F1 - it does go through clutches faster. A smart driver can extend the life, but in general they'll wear faster than a good 'ole fashioned 6 spd...

Over the course of production on any car many small things are improved as the manufacturer realizes the 'oopses'. The only real documented change I've heard of is the improved valve guides, but there's likely other small details that improved too. That was my logic....good luck!

Definitely have someone knowledgeable and experience check the car out first and a PPI is also a must. Regardless of mileage, car is due for a Major Service unless it's done recently. Price is depending on many variables/factors such as mechanical condition, service history, exterior/interior conditions, mileage, color, geographical location and of course how badly you want this car. Since it's a '99 then valve guide is a non-issue. However, headers will go eventually so is F1 clutch....But at 3000miles I think you're still ok for a while. Again, a proper PPI is a very good insurance. Once you get the car and Major Service is done then all you need is a Capristo with Hyperflows and you'll be driving and sounding like Michael Schumacher!!! Of course all these will take $$ to make it happen...but hey you've got to pay to play, right?

Best of luck getting this car.
Hope to see you posting as its new owner soon.

Ok, some new developments on the car from Motorcars Int'l:

I've come to find that the entire car was resprayed/repainted. Apparently the previous owner was so anal about the bumper matching the rest of the car, that he went ahead and repainted the whole thing! No accidents I'm told, but I do have to say, I've never heard of something like that. Repainting the bumper I can understand...but the whole car? What does that do to resale? Albeit it is painted the original factory color. 30K is due on this car.

I also did come across a 98 6-speed coupe. 17K miles. 30K done last year in Aug I'm told. Asking $80K. What do you guys think?

I did go through as many threads as I could about the 355 since last year on this forum. To be honest I am still confused about the bigger maintence issues that this car has. So could someone please chime in and let me know what needs to be asked of these cars as far as getting a less headache causing 355?

On my list of things to ask about are:

    1). 30K service/belt change
2). Valve guide issue (something about brass vs S.S.)
    3). Headers that crack?
    4). Cats
    5). Leather shrinkage
    6). Stickiness of interior pieces

Am I missing anything? Remember I am dealing with 98+ either 6-speed or F1 Berlinettas.

    Feedbacks appreciated.

Jim, you pretty much cover all critical area of what to look for before buying a 355. One more thing I would focus on a Berlinetta is to see if there is stress line fracture/crack at the base of C-pillar. As far as the story of anal owner repainted the whole car to match new bumper cover??? Well, I don't buy it. Imagine having to convince the next buyer with the same story when your time comes to sell this car.

Patrick, my sentiments exactly. Shame though, I actually do like the colors on this car. I wonder however if a proper PPI would catch any type of bodywork or previous damage to the car. That said, wouldn't it be good grounds to bargain on the price assuming there isn't any damage and the owner was really just that anal?

I also concluded that I do want an F1 Berlinetta. A couple of recent finds are:

Does anyone know about these cars? Previous F-chatters? How about these dealers?

If anyone knows of any leads on F1 Berlinettas, please let me know. Would also prefer dealers as I have a possible trade.

    Thanks!

I've called a couple of dealers to get an idea of what the 30K costs on the 355. So far it's ranged from $7500~$9500. Just curious if there are any other independent service shops in the Los Angeles area that are honest and held in high regard for this type of service. Would like to get ideas on independent shop costs versus dealer prices.

    Thanks.

Thanks for referral guys. I will definitely keep him in mind shoud I get to pick up a 355.

Patrick, thanks for the cars you've listed. I'll keep them in mind though my preference would be an F1 Berlinetta, 98~99. Also prefer a dealership as I plan on trading in a car.

I did find one on Ebay, but from a dealership that I've never heard of. Car is due for 30K as well though:

    http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1999-Ferrari-F355-Berlinetta-F1-10K-Service-DONE_W0QQitemZ330108220388QQihZ014QQcategoryZ6212QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Not crazy about the dark blue exterior, but also noticed that the engine compartment looks rather unkept compared to what I've seen out there.

By all means if anyone else has any leads, let me know. Really do appreciate it.

I'm pretty much in the same boat - I'm looking for a 95 355B - and my checklist looks a lot like yours, including the paint on the sails. Some things that I've noticed:
Headers - you see a lot of Tubi Exhausts. Keep in mind that these are mufflers, not the same as the headers. You may just plan on getting the headers QVed after you get the car for #3k(?) or so.
Do a compression and leakdown test before the rest of the PPI. Bad numbers are a deal-breaker for me.
There seems to be a preference for USA model cars.
A cockpit fire extinguisher may indicate track use (only 6,000 miles - at 8,499RPM :))

Oh - one other thing - double your projected maintenance bills. You know about the really big hits, but keep in mind that there can be a lot of small hits, too.
