    Ok so I donated blood for the first time today. Goes to a good cause and I did it with some friends. Got VERY light-headed but the staff there took good care of me and I was determined NOT to pass out in front of my friends so it didn't happen. :D This is a serious question for any of you doctors/medically knowledgeable people reading.

    They told me no working out after, did it before I gave because I figured it wouldn't be a good idea. Now I will be going to a party with my girlfriend and we haven't had sex since Monday and I want to tonight and I know she does too. Will I be able to achieve an erection and perform as I normally would without passing out tonight due to a lot of blood be redirected somewhere else? Or should I just suck it up and wait a couple days because of my lack of blood?

    My guess would be that you should wait a few days. Putting strain on your heart and lungs after giving blood is not a good idea.

    I have never given life due to some of the same fears. At 120 lbs I wondered if the quantity ratio would make me dizzy, etc. Call me a wimp. Yeah, & I'm O neg. The guilt is killing me but I don't want to be feeling woozy for a week. One of my X BFs used to give max times/year & would go to the gym same day.

    Do they allow you to donate blood if your tattooed?

    I've given blood many times. It is recommended to avoid strenuous physical activity for 24-48 hrs. For me, personally, 24 hrs and I feel just great. I've even gone for a 5 mile run the next morning. Be sure to drink LOTS of water, to the point where you feel like you can't drink any more, then force yourself to drink more. Otherwise you will be dehydrated the next day. Similarly, avoid alcohol for 24 hrs after donation since alcohol will dehydrate you even more. Get plenty of sleep that night as well.

    Though I do not have any tattoos, I don't think they prevent anyone from donating if they have tattoos. They check the blood for diseases and such after donation anyway.

    As far as sex goes, if you donated blood in the morning and you're a healthy young adult, chances are you'll be fine at night.

    What are you worried about...it'll all be over with in 2 minutes anyhow. That's hardly strenuous exercise. :)

    Seriously, being young you're probably good to go.

    No, I don't need attention on a public forum. I posted a serious question knowing there were quite a few on here in the medical field who might have an equally serious answer. My doctor was off by the time I was done giving blood and I hadn't thought about what effects the loss of blood would have on me in time to speak with him. I would go somewhere else if I wanted attention :).

    Speedy thanks for the tip on the water! They recommended at the blood center I have an extra quart of water yesterday, today, & tomorrow and it's true. Woke up this morning PARCHED. Almost felt hungover, just no headache. As far as tattoos goes I do not have any but I think they do not allow you to donate if you have gotten a tattoo within a year. Also I think if you visited certain countries within a year they don't let you donate as well.

    Just incase any of you were wondering it did not have any effect on me. I'm only 21 and consider myself to be in good shape, which is why I think I was fine. Buzz I did go a little longer then 2 minutes :D
