They are the Devil in disguise. Virtually none are grown in US, mostly Columbia/Kenya/India where there is almost no environmental regulation. Their farming involves one of, correction, THE MOST heavily polluting, environmentally ravaging agriculture facet in the world.

Flowers.......peddled (pun intended) for fools, marketed by international conglomerates (UK/Holland) who are betting that the customer will be desperate to impress their mate.

If North America stopped importing everything that came from countries with poor track records for the environment we would be hypocrites. NA pollutes a boat load just like everyone else and consumes several times the energy and natural resources of any other country per person.

Get over your shock and awe.

So can I coerce you to buy dandelions? Or do you feel you must impress your mate?

The US (or Canada for that matter) does NOT have an Ag industry polluting like flowers. You dont shock/ awe no one.

Not too keen on having these holidays forced down my throat anyway. I know it's consumerism but it doesn't mean you have to buy into it.

I've noticed that the quality of the roses isn't that great anyway. Not much fragrance and they look a little lifeless. It won't be too hard to think of an alternative.

Technically speaking, you can get roses at your local City Park, so-called friends, sleeping neighbors...

It helps the US economy, as you'll be buying a pair of pruning shears and a ski mask, while shortly afterwards, neighbor and so-called friend will update fencing, security lighting and local Parks & Recreation Dept. will hire an extra staffer, along with everyone planting more rose bushes.

    WIN/WIN/WIN

I said get over YOUR shock and awe, try reading the whole post and polluting while growing flowers is even on the top one million "things to do for the environment" list.

Who would want a dandelion other than the mother of a 3 year old? What woman would be "impressed" by roses? They're just flowers and if that's your gift so be it. If you choose not to buy anything during holidays, so be it.

Let me offer my female perspective on Valentine's Day. It is just a holiday to boost sales of multitudes of products and to drive men crazy. If you really feel compelled to do something special - then do something special. Relying upon these worn standards of roses and chocolates is weak. You have to ask yourself - what would she really enjoy?

Me - I would probably enjoy taking track classes together. Don't you know fast cars have the power to evaporate panties right off. ;)

from a practical standpoint..... roses last a week and are done, and when they wilt, your stuck with the "if you loved me, you'd get me more..." For the same amount of money, I can get a number of things that will last longer and be more beneficial.... Liberator.com is a great start !

and I'll second the fast cars/panties thought.... seems like when the top is down, there is a lot of fun to be had.....

I agree he's a cheap-O like Johnny Drama from Entourage, breaks up with a girl a week before all major holidays so he doesn't have to buy her gifts.

I bet he doesn't burn fuel in his car because he rides a bicycle constructed from elephant dung.

Bahhh-Humbug to Valentines Day!............ and I told that to Melodie on Day-One! I don't get sucked into it just so Hallmark, candy makers and the National Association of Rose Growers of America can stuff $15B in the pockets in a single week! Every day should be Valentines Day and if one needs a special day out of the year to be nice to their SO, then something is wrong with the relationship in general!

Wanna have some fun on Valentines Day? Go to the mall and hour before they close and poke your nose in a Frederick's of Hollywood or a Victoria's Secret store and watch 30+ guys fight over the last remaining Teddie or a 3-pack of sexy thong underwear. It's a riot! And on your way out of the mall, look at all the 'sheeple' lined up to by an overpriced box of See's candy.

Thanks for the posts, guys. Ill not reply to the few insults from cyber ruffians, sent along with the pseudo sense of empowerment of having more posts than myself.

No kidding, the cut flower industry is not the only polluter on earth, and computer monitors made with cadmium/mercury are also a problem, but, lets start each of those threads AFTER valentine's day, OK?? My thread was timed for TODAY with it's relevancy to such a topic, not computers, or diamonds, or other problems. Those of course, can be debated one by one another day.

I mean heck, lets start one on GW (global warming), but NEXT WEEK, after this "holiday". Sheesh........ Madderafac, I am ready , willing , and quite able to debate pollution any day, anywhere, with whomever, even cyber bullies (who are actually very easy to handle).............

As mentioned by some members, roses/cheap corporate chocolate private labelled by Hershey's packed in a heart shaped box is so unthoughtful. How about cooking your mate a meal, with Pavarotti playing in the background, while you sing along pretending you know the words to Nessun Dorma?? I mean, Val Day is that romantic spirit, and hey, Pavaroti and Ferrari have strong connections to Modena, birthplace to Luciano and first factory.......

In the end, she'll compliment your food, and who knows, take it from there........

Whatever you do, enjoy the "Holiday"!

    Joe
