Did the usual useless search, came up with hundreds of hits, starting with "Alfa Romeo." My 550 driver's side door started squeaking badly when swinging open/closed. It immediately became bad enough that it was shuddering to move a bit. I fetched the trusty WD40 and shot a bit on both hinges and the "tie-rod mechanism." I assumed the latter has somewhere in it a spring against a roller that holds the open door in a couple of positions. I can usually see that in other vehicles, but not this one. The door immediately was no longer shuddering or squeaking through its arc, but also will not stay open anywhere along that arc. One would not think this to be such a big deal, but it's noteworthy how difficult it makes getting my tall body in and out of the car. Advice, please? Thanks, ~Troyce Greeneville TN USA
If the pin in the end of that rod falls out, then your door stopper will not work any more like you describe. It happened on my 550 too snd it was very unpractical. Try to go to a body shop / carrosseria who should have a few more pins. Make sure it stays through the two holes on the frame of the body. I dod this and everything is fine now. Good luck.
Somewhat off topic but WD-40 isn't really meant for this sort of thing. Shoot some silicon based lubricant on there.
the forementioned pin i am told is a much harder metal than what it sits in, therefore wearing out the soft metal(likely an alloy) with every open/close. i replaced mine with the same ferrari part on the drivers side, but not really a long term solution.
I don't see anything obviously missing from the mechanism in my door. Both the driver's side and passenger side appear the same, and the pax side works. Which part is this pin, per a diagram, please? Thanks much for the replies.
Thanks much for the replies. I've studied the parts diagrams and cannot spot which part is this pin. I cannot see it, nor anything conspicuously missing, on my car. Both driver's and pax side appear the same; the pax side works properly. Please indicate part per a parts diagram? Thanks again.
