When opening driver door on a car I am looking at I hear a creak/pop twice. First about a quarter of the way and then again almost fully open. Any ideas of problem and cost to repair? Car has 42K miles.

I figure it is the hinge. Is it going bad or just needs to be lubricated? Cost if it needs a new hinge?

Can you lift the door? If you grab the door where the door handle is (not the handle itself!) when "45 degree open" can you feel it moving in the hinge? If not, probably just oil needed. If you can feel it moving up and down in the hinge, it need to be fixed. It could also be the thing preventing the door from opening too much, that can make a sound. Oil.

No idea where to buy or to what cost. It is "just" a mechanical part, but again...

99.99% sure it's the door hinge pin, had to replace one each on my GTB and GTS QV. The pin is about an 1/8 inch in diameter and 1 1/2 inches long, it secures the door stay to the door frame so the door can't travel too far outward. About $12, you just drive the old pin out with a hammer and small punch.

As I understand the door pin issue these things are made of a softer metal then the hinge so that they take the wear instead of the hinge so that the hinge never needs replacing. And wear they do. The other item that can make noise is the little piece that prevents the door from opening too far as it also pivots. Also, I believe there is a snap ring on the end of said pin that needs removing before attempting to remove.

    See part 44

Spring pin in the door stop (not the 2 hinges) It broke, replace it. It used to be cheap.

It is the check arm pin the check arm is the black plastic part sticking out half way down i keeps the door from flying open and it has bumps on it that are go in to a housing with strong springs so if the pin is loose in the check arm then it makes a snaping noice in both directions to fix this you have to reame it out to the next sice and install a new pin very easy the reasen i know my company makes a lot of check arms for thr OEM and this is a comen problem.

It is not the pin that is worn it is the hole in the check arm got oval and it clicks every time when the springs push it over the bumps or in your case the groove in the Arm the Arm is mild steel you will find that the hole is oval so you need a bigger pin or pean the hole back.the 2holes in the door itself could also be oval all you have to do is open the door slowly and watch the pin you will see it jump and you hear the click

Of the doors that I have seen, samples less than 5, the flimsy spring inside the hole breaks. The hole remains the same size. Replacement of the spring is all it takes.

Thanks for the info. After the test drive I don't think I will have to worry about the door pin. Leaked antifreeze and slow down light was on. Car is rough so I will keep searching.

yes the click/clack twice is very common, they all do that...live with it or replace spring, grease the pin(hinges)...
