does anyone know where i can get a set? my car has some kind of miserable stereo installed, which i'd like to DE-install, speakers and all! oh, and i'd also like to find a radio blank plate, too! thanks phil
Go to an upholstery shop and have them made. 2 reasons for this: 1. Finding an undamaged door panel is almost impossible as they have all been butchered in one way or another. 2. Even if you found a panel it would not fit. Any competent Dino person will tell you that door panels vary wildly from car to car and require minute on car fitting so that the doors close properly. Luckily the door panels are a very easy job for an upholsterer. You should get your car back in 1 day and the fit will be perfect. As for the radio blanking plate, it is a rectangle of sheet metal with dash material glued to it. The same upholstery shop can make one for you.
thanks...do you think there's any way they can fix the current panels, with the speaker holes in them? also, any idea of what that would cost? and finally, any recommendations of who to use? thanks! phil
Doesn't matt at reoriginals make these anymore? http://reoriginals.com/doorpanelsinleathermadeinitalyinferraris-u0038.aspx OH, and if you want them installed perfectly, go to a custom auto stereo shop. I bought them from Matt some years ago, and went to a friend who installs high end stereos. His guys did a PERFECT installation job. Dave
Auto's International in Escondido, ca. will make and send. They've done a # of jobs for me and have the pattern. They are well know in the Porsche 356 world. Ask for Ralph.
Repairing the existing panels once drilled is impossible. Luckily the material they are made out of is dirt cheap (maybe $5 per door) and is in no way tied to the originallity of the car. Now that I think of it the repair is even easier than I thought because the area where the speaker holes are is flat and the stitched panel with horizontal lines is a removable insert that can be transferred to the new door skin. This means that there is no stitching of any kind for the repair and it can even be a DIY project if you are a little handy. I cannot recommend anyone in NY to do the repair but you will want to find somone local because it is in your best interest to have the panel fitted on the car so that the doors close properly. As far as cost goes, assuming that the shop is fair and does not apply a 'Ferrari Tax' I would think that $500-$800 is well paid for the job.
this is a fantastic idea! i guess the next question is does anyone know of a good person to do this in the new york city area?
Phil- I have a marvelous guy who did my door panels on the 74 gts. He is located in Norwalk CT and is very reasonable. I can help you with all this and it would be fun to catch up with you. I will be in NYC on tues for dinner or just call me 203 536 8230 Champ
