I just had my gear box repaired on my 365 GT. To prevent another problem, how many of you double clutch your old ferrari`s Gavin
Thankfully I don't have to double clutch my 365GT. I say thankfully, because the clutch spring is pretty robust. When I come to a stop, I always let it idle in neutral with the clutch out and then put it into 1st just before the light changes to green. I do that mainly to save the throw out bearing. On the other hand, I stopped speed shifting years ago and am pretty gentle with my shifts. I do a deliberate out move and in move, never straight across.
Of course if you can time the revs just perfectly no clutch need to be used.I do this regularly on my 250 California reproduction car with its 5 speed tremac box. However I would never recommend this be done on any collector or historic motor vehicle. I would'nt use it even on the 328GTS I had in Italy for a few years. The shifting mechanism on those cars is heavy, slow and inaccurate. Regular fast double clutching on the down shifts serves four purposes. It eases the strain on the box, helps preserve the syncro rings, should quarantee smooth shifting as long as the revs are well timed and sounds a lot better. It should alway be used when down shifting at speed into first or second gear. And finally don't downshift into any gear that will raise the revs over about 4500rpm when you let the clutch in. Keep to these rules and you can still pretend you are Ascari or whome ever is your idol and preserve your machine. just one man's opinion tongascrew
I double clutch all downshifts in all cars including everyday roadcars, not because it is necessary, but to keep in practice and minimize wear on syncros if present and out of necessity if not. It becomes a simple, automatic sequence if you do it all of the time - 5 foot movements and 2 hand movements all in a smoothly orchestrated action. Plus, when you get it just right and throw a heel and toe in there, if just plain feels good! As Tonga said, it allows you to channel your inner Fangio....Ascari, Hill or other legend of your choosing.
Although I own a "worthless" 328 GTB, I love to downshift via double-declutching. BUT: my older Maserati likes it more! Ciao! Walter
I had the 328GTS in Italy. Please, not worthless. It is probably the best and least expensive way to get started and is great fun to drive. Far from perfect but what Ferrari is. just one man's opinion tongascrew
