I have a question. How many of you double park (taking up two spaces intentionally) and were there any consequences in doing so(i.e. someone did something bad to your ferrari). I just wonder this, as I do not own a Ferrari or an exotic, and I hate when people double park.

I would never double park, it just pisses others off regardless of what you are parking. I do like parking next to the handicapped space though. They usually stay empty the whole time I am there and one less side of the car to worry about someone dinging (and better viewing for other auto enthusiasts).

I do the handicapped thing too. Mostly I park way out at the end of the lot where people don't want to park anyway.

I pick the safest spot I can find. whatever that may be. I never double park. And I'm always willing to leave if there isn't a spot I am comfortable with.

Double parking is a bad idea - just reinforces the primadonna image.

I just find a wide space or park in the empty part of the lot. Or park between two Enzos.

It's a no-win situation. If you park way out in no-man's land (which I do in any car I have) people notice you more and have some urge to come mess with your car.

If you park in the middle of everything, soccermom nails your door anyway.

    Just don't park! Keep driving.

I don't double park. I usually park in the back of lot where no one would want to park. Most of the time when I come out someone will have parked right next to me. I never understand why!

You'd hope so, but I've had someone admit to doing it as a "ha, you're not special and can't show off anymore now that my rust bucket is blocking everyone from seeing your car" imagined revenge reasons. Person seemed utterly convinced the only possible reason anyone would ever park their car away from everyone else in the empty area of a lot was to show off and draw attention to their car.

I did the boondocks parking thing, too. There'd be two rusty trucks next to the car when I came out.

I think they're hoping their vehicles will learn something by proximity. ;)

I concluded that I could park on the dark side of the Moon, and I'd still wind up with two old Lunar Rovers next to me -- one with a banged up fender. (Remember Apollo 16?) :p

When you leave an empty space next to you, you don't know who will park there. If a handicapped space, it'll likely be someone who doesn't pay attention to the signs.

Once, I parked out in the boonies. A truck tried to park next to me, hit my mirror, and ran away. (A truck, based only on the paint left on the mirror.) By the time I got back, a minivan had parked next to me. (Different color paint.)

At work, I try to park next to a well maintained vehicle -- one the owner is careful with. Or next to a small vehicle (like a Mini) that doesn't need too much room to maneuver. But that's where the cars will likely stay there all day.

At the market, I park just about anywhere. There'll be three cars in and out of that space in ten minutes. That's why you have insurance.

Around here, I just try to avoid parking next to cars with Maryland tags. I've seen those cars being driven on the roads. Or next to oversized SUVs with crumpled right-rear corners ... which is just about all of them. (Do you know where your corners are?)

Never double park...just brings additional unwanted comments and attention.

Personally I shy way form the "way out in the field" notion also. Obviously it's easier to see a single car out all by itself, which brings it's own attention. Plus with really no one else around (coming and going), people are a little bolder since they can see the owner comming...

I try to go for the "fringe" areas of any big lot... start of an empty row, somewhere away from the door, but with 1-2 other cars in the general area which gives a little camouflage.

Parking any nice car can be tricky depending on your area and the general public's overall knowledge of cars. I try to find a placement that simply draws as little attention as possible if that makes any sense.

I never used to double park, but in the last few weeks I have done it a few times. I would rather someone intentionally mess with my car than to have some absent minded knucklehead open a door into me. I always thought that it was rude taking up two spots, and it very well may be rude, but for peace of mind, I have been taking up two spots. The only exception, is in a crowded parking lot, but I avoid those anyway. With lots of spots open, I'll take two to avoid someone parking next to me.

Never double park. That gives a reason for someone to ding you out of spite. I try to park next to a landscape island. Or next to another Ferrari.

:) When I'm entering a parking lot with my Alfa Romeo (don't have a Ferrari yet) and see a Ferrari parked in the back of the lot I will ALWAYS park next to it :) I'll tell you why... not only because I want to have a closer look to a great car I really really love but also to protect the Ferrari from other cars banging their doors on the Ferrari... in other words, I use my car as a shield/treasure keeper for one side of the Ferrari :);) That's my explanation...

I always watch out very carefully where to park... looking out for spots that are wide or next to cars that are well maintaned or look like they are owned by people who respect their car (and hopefully others too). And this is only about a Alfa, I have a feeling this feeling will only get worse once I will own a Ferrari myself... :) I would never double park though... brings up negative attention indeed...

How much would it cost for me to hire you and another guy to follow me around and surround my car everytime I park?

And what's a good name for this new business?

I never take two spaces (except at car shows where everyone is), but I do try to look for spaces that are a bit on the wide side. I don't mind parking between other vehicles; in fact I prefer that to parking next to an empty space, because that adds an unknown into the equation!

I do tend to avoid parking next to minivans or SUVs, because that often means kids, and you don't know what they are likely to do. And I prefer lots with angled spaces, because that means the other cars' doors are usually not right alongside of you.

In two years I've never had a problem with parking. I think that being an older and well-known model, the 328 gets more respect than the newer models might. (I think most people think of a 308 or 328 owner as a classic car fancier, whereas the owner of a new model is probably seen by many as a filthy-rich snob!)

when going into a paid parking area i always pay for 2 spots if there is a attendent. 9 times out of 10 they only charge me for the one, i park in 2 and give the attendant the fee for the other spot to put in his pocket. get 2 spots and a attendant that watches the car. if he takes the money for 2 spots give him some money and there still happy. cost of having fun!

It seems like it would be a bad idea to take 2 spots in a regular lot. I mean anyone can walk up and mess with your car regardless of how many spots you take and taking more than one spot definitely draws more attention to your car.

Here in the states, "double-park" usually refers to parking on the street next to a car that is in a legal parking space. For example, when a line of cars has parallel parked next to the curb, and the UPS truck comes up and just stops in the lane next to these cars, that's "double-parking".

Do you guys use that term for the practice of taking up two spots in a parking lot instead? What do you call the situation I describe above?

    Just curious,

    Slim
