Bernie blames Ferrari for double points | Planet F1 | Formula One News

Bernie Ecclestone says the new double points rule has been implemented because of Ferrari's failure to take on Red Bull Racing.

Red Bull have reigned supreme in recent years, winning four successive Constructors' titles while Sebastian Vettel has taken the Drivers' crown.

Such is the German's level of dominance that last season he won the Championship with three races to spare.

Ferrari driver Fernando Alonso was second, a whopping 155 points off the pace. The Spaniard won just two races, Vettel won 13.

And it's because of Ferrari's failure to stop Red Bull that this season Formula One will award double points at the final race in Abu Dhabi.

Speaking to City AM's Christian Sylt, Ecclestone revealed he had a conversation with Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo about the issue.

"He [di Montezemolo] was talking about it and I said: 'It is very simple why we got that [rule]. It is because you aren't performing. If you were doing what you should be doing there wouldn't be any need for it'," said Ecclestone.

"He said: 'I know, I know.'"

Red Bull dominated the final races, no?

The above simply provides motivation for teams to stay on top for a season, rather than giving up at mid point.

I'd rather see each race count equal, but I do not mind making the last count extra as the ol "We're working on next year's car now" story is well...old.

    WTF?

Alonso finished 2nd to Vettel in the standings 3 out of the last 4 years. It's not any more "Ferrari's fault" than any other team on the grid. Ferrari did a better job than anyone except Red Bull.

I can tend to agree with that, however according to Newey because they never gave up improving last years car and carried on dominating, this years car has not had enough time/budget spent on it, but of course it could be all hot wind.

Why do people still read these sort of statements being made by Bernie after all these years and not think straight away that all it is, is Bernie being controversial to stir the pot and get F1 on the back pages of the papers/on the internet?

Bernie knows full well that Ferrari are still to this day the biggest name in F1 and by embroiling them into the reasons for introducing controversial ideas/rules, the Worlds press will jump on the story immediately.

Bernie is also very clever when he comes to quoting people. Whilst LDM may well have said: "I know, I know" at some point in a conversation, it may not have been in agreement that Ferrari are to blame for the double points as Bernie is implying.

For example, Bernie could have pointed out that the Alonso/Kimi driver combination could cause friction within the team, to which LDM may have agreed stating: "I know, I know". Bernie would then take LDM's statement and drop it in where he feels fit for his own purposes. Should it later be queried, he'd then simply state that all he'd said was that LDM had said: "I know, I know", which he did, and that it was not his fault if the press put two and two together and came up with 5!

Bernie is an expert at getting people to read into statements what he wants them to and the press/internet buy it hook line and sinker every time!
